What's new

Do any stores sell the "fat" styptic pencils anymore?

I've searched through every pharmacy, Walmart, and supermarket in my suburb of Boston and, on the rare occasions when do they carry styptic pencils, they're the "thin" ones (i.e., diameter no larger than that of a ballpoint pen). These are cheap, aren't good for anything more than the smallest weeper, and degrade quickly. Whatever happened to the larger, lipstick-diameter styptic pencils? Do I need to spend $8 (including shipping) mail order for something I should be able to get for $3 in my local CVS/Walgreens/Rite Aid?

You might also try alum bar's.

More bang for the buck.

Also, if you go to a health food store, they usually have Crystal deodorant, which is alum as well. A little different variety, but it works well for me.

I'm not very scientific and can't give you all the details, but I know I've read a couple threads on this subject.

Try Sally's Beauty Supply. They carry the Ed. Pinaud Clubman products, and their styptic pencil is the thick kind. And if you're still out of luck, you can always order direct from the Clubman website.

I've never used a styptic pencil, so I wonder: what difference does it make?

Not being a smart aleck, just wondering what the advantage of a fat one is.

The only place I have seen the fat ones are at Rodmans Drug in Washington DC. I think they are local only. Since I don't know where you are, I don't know if this helps.

+1 for the fat col. conk pencil

for another alternative, i've been very curious about the "my nik is sealed" styptic pen. it basically uses a roll-on style ball which i would imagine is much nicer to use

Maybe you should think about a suture kit? ;)

I did have a fat styptic stick at one time, but now all I could find is the same skinny one - without any paper wrapped around it like it used to be. Nude, so to speak. And a crummy stopper instead of a screw on end. In fact, it seems like everybody around here in Portland has the same supplier. Probably composed of Chinese drywall.

Your absolutely right though, the skinny ones break easily, degrade quickly - kind of painful.

:)

If I saw one locally, I'd buy it, but not mail-order unless I was purchasing other items. For $8 I can buy 4 skinny ones.

Thank you. You're the only one who understands where I'm coming from.

I would check a beauty supply store. I believe I've seen them, marketed by Clubman, at Sally's Beauty Supply.

It can make a lot of difference depending on often you nick yourself. It'll keep that small capillary bleeder from looking like you've been shaved by Sweeney Todd (capillaries can bleed profusely). The advantages of a thicker pencil would be that they cover a larger surface area, and don't melt away as fast as the thinner ones. :001_smile

It might be regional, but my local Walbaum's (grocery store) carries the fat lipstick sized styptic (comes with a clear hard plastic cover). I was suprised to see it there.

Rite-Aid has the thicker ones. CVS only sells those tiny ones that are worse than generic chalk. Even thinking about picking those little things up makes them break.

In Australia, at least where I live, the thick ones are about all we can get. Most large drug stores carry them. My problem is, once they get wet, like when you give them a rinse to remove blood, they quickly degrade and fall apart. Is this normal or am I doing something wrong? I was thinking those matchbook style styptics might be the answer but the roll-on above looks interesting.

Yep. I left mine in a puddle on my countertop, and when I went to reach for it... it was gone! That's why a lot of them come in plastic tubes to keep it dry. Just leave it away from the water when you shave. I put mine on the window sill.
