Do any of you have a Skype number?

I am considering getting Skype premium. My cell phone gets poor reception in my house, and I cannot justify the cost of a landline phone. Skype would be a good way to make important phone calls from home. They also sell Skype phones, which connect to one's computer via USB. Skype costs about $3 per month. I would just pay per minute used.

Thoughts?

I'm curious about this as well. I'm thinking more for official phone. It would go to voicemail nearly all the time

I don't even use our cell phone (maybe 2 or 3 times this year if that).

I'm not a big phone person. Email me if you want to talk.

Don't bother me with a phone call, I won't answer :nono:

AT&T rates are outrageous. I still have a land-line for local calls only just for super emergency calls such as 911 when I don't want to rely on internet/reception/power.
As for skype, it is the best deal IMO and I have been using it for 5 years now. I pay a little extra for the plan where I can call any land line on the planet for next to nothing and an excellent rate when calling cellphones (intl). Helps me keep in touch with the family abroad. I also have it installed on my cell phone (same account, they don't mind).
As for the USB phones. They are alright and do the work. I had one that died (d-link) but that was 5 years ago. There are other usb attachments when you plug your regular phone into them and your land line so you can call out using skype if you want from a cordless phone. The only downside is that the pc has to be on. no bigge for me.
There is another product that connects to your router and your land line and it acts as a skype device by FreeTalk. Don't buy it, it works 50% of the time and there is no tech support for it.

In all, I recommend it. There is no contract, so you could always cancel it after a month.

Yeah I got a Skype number and then my plans changed. As was stated above though, you can cancel it easily enough if for some reason you're not satisfied.

If you have an Android phone, you can download Skype and use the phone with the wifi in your house to make skype calls on your cell phone.

Also check out the talkatone app if you get a google voice number. It runs on Android or iOS devices (including iTouch and tablets). If you have a good internet connection it works pretty well as a way to receive and originate calls. You can send/receive SMS from a desktop computer browser using this number as well. The big benefit is that you can get throwaway prepaid phones/numbers and integrate them with your google phone number, which can now act as your portable/universal phone number going forward. Can configure time of day rules to forward your calls to other phone numbers, for example to call your work number during the day, and home number in the evening.

Skype works well too, the voice quality might even be better than google, but I don't recall the extent to which it can integrate with other phones.
