DMT D8EE "Extra Extra Fine" Question

I recently purchased this new from Vintage Blades, but it does not look right to me...

The steel appears to be simply galvanized metal on each side and I am unable to differentiate which side is the grit by either sight or feel. The other DMT's I own are quite different on the grit side than the opposite side so I am not sure what to do. Did I possibly aquire a bad DMT or is that what it is supposed to be like?

I dont know if pictures would help at all, but I'll provide them if nobody knows what is going on without them.

Thanks

The DMT8EE is quite smooth, and several folks have had issue with determining which side is the coated one. However, the top side is "up" whenever the side marking is also upright and legible.

Thats probably what its supposed to feel like. The EE is an "8k" stone after all.

Another option if the marking has rubbed off would be to hold the stone up to the light and see which side reflects the diamonds. You could also run your fingernail across one side and if it catches on anything, thats the 8k side. The other side should just be nickel and look and feel like metal.

Yah, that is the other problem... The ink marking is all smudged and illegible so I cannot tell which side is up . I'll try the fingernail test too. Thanks.

I had one, and had issues with it too, I also could not figure out which side is which, and as previously stated, if you can read the writing on the side, then it's on the correct side....Good Luck...

Yep! Check the writing on the side. When the writing is right-side up, so is the stone! I suggest attaching the included rubber feet so that you can easily differentiate the sides.

The writing is totally illegible, but I was able to figure out which side was which by using a file.

I took the file to both sides to see which side scratched easier, or at all. One side scratched up really easy, the other not at all. That was the diamond side. I then put on the little rubber feet so that I wont forget which side

Thanks for all of you help!
