Diy?

I have gotten to the point of being so frustrated with beauty salons and barbershops that I am considering doing it myself with a pair of clippers. Has anyone out there made that jump or had the same thoughts?

I do that quite frequently. The wife is pretty adept at it now, and in the summer months, I just use the longest comb and do it by myself. Leaves a hair length of about 1/2 inch all over which suits me just fine.

In the past, for whatever reason, I thought on a few occasions that I could cut my own hair. It may work for some people but for me it was kind of a rub your belly pat your head thing. In the mirror everything was confusing. After the last time, I made up my mind that it was a professional that would be doing it from there on

Been cutting my own hair for the last ~6 years. I use a longer comb for the top and then a short one for the sides. I move the clippers away from my head as I go up so the sides will be tapered.

The Wahl sets they sell at wal-mart are all you need. My clippers have a vacuum built into them so they don't make a giant mess.

I used to do it before I met my wife. went and bought clippers from target and gave myself buzzcuts. unfortunately, my wife prefers me with longer hair so once we started dating she banned the clippers and i've been stuck with having to pay for haircuts ever since. clippers are a good investment if you have low maintenance hair like me

I usually shave my head with a clipper, I leave the hair a bit longer on top and shorter on the side otherwise, it's really really round!

I haven't been to a barber in over 6 months. My beef was not so much the cost, but that I could not get them them to cut it the way I wanted. Perhaps I am just not articulate. After 21 years in the military, I do not want a military cut, but invariably that is what I come away with.

I purchased the Wahl self cutting kit from Amazon:

http://www.amazon.com/Wahl-Deluxe-Y...sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=beauty&qid=1272236215&sr=8-1

In addition to having the handle sideways, the cutting head rotates, so it makes it easy to switch sides.

I don't use the guides that attach to the clipper, but use a long comb. In the back it is challenging, but I think I've gotten better with practice. The clipper paid for itself with a couple of cuts.

As for the outcome, take a look at my picture (avatar). Note that in the Renaissance photo, I parted my hair down the middle and forward due to the festivities.

I love being self-reliant. I cut my grass, change my oil/transmission/brake pads and rotate my tires. None of my middle-class neighbors do that stuff themselves. Cutting my own hair fits in with that as well. I wish more people were self-reliant--many of them are wimps. Thanks for reading.

I've had SWMBO do it. I'm too worried about missing bits at the back.

That always seems to happen to me... SWMBO checks it and say, yeah it's all right. In the afternoon, wait, hang on, there's a bunch that you missed at the back!

What happened? She was sleep walking, classic...

I'm embarrassed to tell anyone this, but I actually shaved my head a couple years ago just so I could use the Headblade. I saw them in the store when they first came out and though it was such an interesting idea I had to try it. Unfortunately I could never get the hang of the headblade and usually ended up cutting myself every time I used it. I switched to the Mach3 for a while but my hair is very thick and a cartridge wouldn't last more than 2 or 3 shaves, so I finally just went to using a #2 guard on the clippers, once a week. I really like my hair short but the Fiancee HATES it so now my sister cuts it once a month.

If you want to do one length all over think you should go for it.

My wife cuts mine usually, and does a good job. About two years ago she was bedridden with an illness for an extended time, pretty serious, and between taking care of her and work, my hair was down past my nose in front and on my shoulders in back. In a Britney Spears-like fit of frustration and stress, I took out the clippers and shaved off my head, no mirror, no attempt at doing a good job of it.

I looked like an extra in a Mad Max movie for about three months. :biggrin1:

My wife has been cutting mine with clippers for 10 years now. Now I shave it because it's easier than trying to get everything even. Bald by choice, not by nature. It's very liberating.
