DIY laser engraving?

For any computer/electronics geeks with perhaps too much time on your hands and a bunch of gold dollars looking for decorations, I came across a guide someone put together to make your own laser engraving set-up.

I managed to put together a DIY microscope stand for my cell phone, but this is a bit beyond my abilities. I hope someone can put this together.

Very cool. I am not sure how powerful it is though. Maybe not enough for steel engraving. However I was thinking about it last night and for engraving some cool custom patterns in scales (kinda like scrimshaw) it would probably work well!

Don't know that I have the time to put it together though...

I seen that yesterday and had the same thought. Even with a Pi and some old drives lying around I think this is beyond my tech-fu. Maybe one day, I should start building up to sorting out one of these: http://forums.bit-tech.net/showthread.php?t=255937&viewmode=author
