DIY Coat Hanger Brush Stand . AAAGH!

Ok, so I have several brushes now, and I have some totally jury-rigged coat hanger hook already in the bathroom closet. Time to take it to the next level, I thought.

I have browsed Ebay and such for brush stands, and I am embarrassed to say that money is tight. Most of those stands cost more than my brushes did, although there are a few that don't look too bad and I would consider buying ... but that's neither here nor there for the purposes of this post.

I like to think that I am a DIY kind of guy, and I have these grand plans on making a wooden rack / shelf with slotted cutouts to hang brushes from. Well, I may get around to that sometime within the next year, but what I needed was a better stand NOW. Instant gratification is a powerful compulsion.

So I had seen a stand that somebody made out of wire and thought I would try a similar idea. Went out and got a coat hanger and clipped the hook off, and grabbed a pair of pliers. I came in, got a brush for fitting measurements, and started bending.

And bending, and straightening, and bending, and tweaking, and more bending. I never got it square plumb and level, and I'm not pleased with how it turned out. I like the basic design, but I am convinced that freehand bending something like this is a really bad idea. It took me about two hours of fooling around with this thing until it was passable enough that I just finally gave up and declared it to be as good as it is going to get.

Maybe with a CNC bending machine, or with special jigs, I could do this right. I like the style, but I am probably not going to make another one considering the ordeal I just went through to make this one lol!

Thought I'd make a post about my experiences anyways :001_smile

There are people that will argue that brush stands are unnecessary. I won't argue that because I don't like arguing, but I use two shelves to keep my 15 brushes and have never had a problem with them not drying properly. I just never use the same brush two days in a row.

Another idea when making your wire brush stand is to make the bend where the brush sits and then use the edge of a desk or counter top to bend the wire to make the legs and base. I've never built one, but it was just an idea I had.

That hanger looks a heckuva lot better than the mutant hanger I made! Though I probably spent 15 minutes on mine, not two hours.. Right now I'm trying to figure out how to make a brush holder with a large binder clip...

For my oddball size brushes,I use an easy to twist Home Depot garden rod. They're vinyl clad ,so they don't mar your handles, and are sealed,so they don't rust.Cheap !!
