Does anyone make their own A S?
I found a couple recipes for Bay Rum I’d like to try.
Would plastic bottles be good enough or would I need to use glass?

Hi Rico DE, welcome to B&B! To answer your question: yes, there are quite a few recipes on the web, mostly based on some kind of drinking alcohol paired with some essential or fragrance oil. Plastic or glass? Your call, but personally I prefer glass as it is non-reactive--some plastics will change the scent of alcohol-based products.

When you get a chance, please drop by the Shave Clinic and Newbie Check-In forum and say hi, and head over to our Hall of Fame and tell us all a bit more about yourself. There are links in my signature to areas of B&B of special interest to new folks--perhaps you might like to have a look at them. If you ever have questions or run into problems, don't hesitate to post them up. We're a welcoming and friendly group here, and there's always someone around to offer advice or lend a hand.

Enjoy your time here, happy shaving, and once again, WELCOME!!

Mason jars work very well until you're ready to decant. Then, typical brown glass medicine bottles/vials are easy to find and work perfectly.

Hi Wingnut,

I checked in at the Shave Clinic and filled out the Hall of Fame form.
And I had similar thoughts about plastic.
Thanks for the reply

Rico

Hi Rushchairman,

I can find Mason jars easily enough. But I'm having trouble finding medicine bottles - and at a reasonable price.
One place is selling 1oz amber bottles with an eyedropper for 7 bucks. Those were the first ones I found with screw-on caps.
Other "fancier" bottles (like at Micheals) just have corks.

Making AS is a trial error type of thing where you need to adjust your quantities (alcohol (or not) versus essential oils versus witch hazel versus else). Glass does make a difference, I always decant any commercial aftershave that I buy in a plastic bottle to a glass bottle. After a week, I notice a good difference.

I store my bulk base in mason jars but I put my finished AS into old (thoroughly rinsed out) Tabasco jars

You can look at antique stores for bottles as well. It's pretty hit or miss, but sometimes you can find nice bottles with reducer orifices for cheap.

You didn't specify a splash or balm. You can make a great balm by combining witch hazel with some aloe vera gel and glycerin (not too much of either). If you want it scented you can add a few drops of EO or scented oil. I've made up a bunch like this and added a few drops of Lime EO for a wonderful lime AS, and another batch with a few drops of white musk for a completely different scent experience.Oh, a few drops of each version together is a great combo. Lime and Musk were made to go together

I found these 200ml flasks at a home brewing shop and the orifice reducers online. I really hate plastic and this worked out well for me. The orifice reducers are about .15/each plus shipping and the flasks were about 2.50/each. Good luck with the recipe.

What kind of alcohol Would be used For Making Aftershave?
Rubbing Alcohol?

You could but if the alcohol is too low, your mix will be cloudy. The high content alcohol are acting as a stabilizer between the water and oil. A lot of gents are recommending something called Everclear.

doctordial

my brain goes "thonk"
I've used Everclear and Myers Jamaican dark rum to make my Bay rum aftershave. I would never drink either one of these though. Lol.

they sell 50-70-80-90% rubbing alcohol you know?
in the US, they also sell Everclear (something like that), its almost pure Ethanol.

Yup, I found some 99% rubbing alcohol locally, the EO is slowly taking over. I'm waiting at the moment...
