Dish vs Direct TV

Well im moving in a week or so to an area of town without cable televison or cable internet. I will be hopping on the DSL bandwidth :(.

I need my B&B brothers opinion on which satellite cable to go with. I hear great things and bad things about both. I have HDTV's so I would really be looking into something with HD capabilities. I dont really care about sports, other than having the YES network. Im still trying to figure out if DISH carries YES.

So speak up...help me with the decision if you will :)

If you don't care about sports that much, I would go with Dish. I have had both, DirecTV now, and say that prices and customer service are better with Dish. I have never had HDTV though so don't know the effects of that.

Do you know if Dish carries the YES network? I tried calling DISH and when i wasnt purchasing right away and instead wanted info on the YES network, I was placed on hold indefinately

I didn't even know what the YES network was until I looked it up. You'd have to check the local channels. Did you try this?

Last time I looked at Dish network they didn't carry YES. My dad specifically got Direct TV to get YES. Originally it was part of a sports package but he haggled with them and they let him add it al carte. I think it costs around $3 a month extra.

The fact that the one time you called Dish for some customer service you were ignored might be a sign...

I, and many friends have DirecTv and we are all very happy with it. I only know of one person with Dish and he's considering moving to DirecTv (more sports channels).

+1

I have DirecTV now and I'm not really a big fan of satellite, but the price is nice. I have the HD package with a DVR and an extra receiver. I think my regular price after my discounts run out will be around $80 a month. I skipped the movie channels as I don't usually watch them anymore. The only complaint that I have with DirecTV is that it seems as if most of the 200+ channels they advertise having are all infomercial channels. That's all that's ever on them.

I've had Dish Network for 6-8yrs and have been very pleased. I dislike having to get the 250 channel package in order to get a few channels I want (Nat. Geo, History Int'l) but I think both have to same problem. I've only had a few interactions with their customer service but had no trouble.

If I had my wish regarding satellite, it would be to pick and choose channels with a flat fee/channel. Out of 250+ channels, I watch < 10!

Just a quick update. I decided to go with Directv. The YES network was a big decision, but the pricing wasnt bad. Its going to be a few dollars cheaper than Dish. Only killer was a second HDDVR box that ran me 200.

Don't be afraid to dicker with them too. I switched to DirectTV from Dish when Dish decided to charge me for the Big 10 Network. DirectTV hasn't been perfect, and I had some problems with the line from my dish to my receiver that took a while to resolve. On the other hand, they have been responsive to my concerns and complaints, and have offered me rate reductions and extra packages. Also, DirectTV has a relationship with Verizon/Verizon Wireless and you can use that to your advantage in bundling services.

I have had Dish for 13 years now. Used to get it free for 10+ years and just went back to them 6 months ago.. Now in my house we have 2 HD DVR irds and 1 sd non dvr running 2 tvs off the one ird.. I like it but I wish, I could get all my old programming back that I had LOL....

I will not even touch Direct TV aka DTV, because back in the testing scene, they started suing individual users...

Cheers,

I had dish for several years, and had no problems with it. When we bought a large screen TV we were offered a better deal if we switched to Direct TV, so we did. That came with a 2 year contract to Direct TV. The first year was fine, around $30-$39 per month.

After that 1st year the price started to climb every month or so until it reached $89.00 per month. If I wanted to get out of the deal it would cost me $450.00 to break the contract. So I've stayed with Direct TV, but now the 2 years is up and I'm looking into going back to Dish. I'll compare the 2 and see who offers the better deal. I just think $89.00 per month is way to much for what I get. :thumbdown
