What's new

Discovered the Merkur 39C after all these years.

It took me awhile to discover the Merkur 39C slant because I am not a huge Merkur fan. I started DE shaving with the Futur and the 38C, but I only thought they were OK. However, after reading the great reviews (and wanting something different), I traded my R41 for a 39C.

What a great surprise this little devil is. This morning I got a close, smooth 2-pass DFS with the fifth shave of a Gillette 7OC blue loaded into a 39C. This shave had some of those "did I forget the blade" moments, especially in the second pass. I suspect that the closeness of the shave may be why some consider it aggressive. To me it is on the mild/smooth side. Not close to my Fatip in aggressiveness, or even the Progress set at 2.5.

Funny, but I read on BB that Merkur had discontinued the slants, 37C and 39C. Well, before I learned it was not true, I panicked and flew from vendor to vendor; the "major" US and European vendors were almost all out of slants. This seemed consistent with the slants going out of production. So, when I finally found 39Cs at Fendrihans, a Canadian vendor, I ordered two! It was then that I learned the rumor had no basis in fact. But I will keep them when they arrive b/c I love this razor and the QC at Merkur is not great, so who knows, I may need them one day.

Anyway, thanks for listening.

I worship the Slant razor, and have a special place in my roster for my Sledgehammer 39C. I too was alarmed by the recent rumors of the demise of Merkur Slant production, and hurriedly looked at several vendors to purchase a backup razor!

Mine isn't a 37 or 39, but something earlier, with a mostly worn-off black finish. It is an amazing tool that I was respectfully fearful of until I completed the first pass. Now I hold it in very high regard.

Very cool! I just rec'd my 39c today as well. I loaded the blade and was ready to shave but it made a loud snap. Is this normal? Because of this I decided to hold off in case there's a problem. It's just me being paranoid probably but thought I would be on the safe side. It only makes the snap when there is a blade in it - when there is no blade, no snap. Just checking to see if this is normal. Thanks!

+1 Maybe not worship my Sledge, but it is and always will be in my top 5 razors. Seems like discussions of slants come and go at B&B along with their popularity except for those of us who are "slanted" towards them.
