I have owned my Gold Fat Handled Tech for a while now and I never could get a good close shave out of it. It just seemed too mild and it just never worked for me so I moved on to other razors. Well I recently brought the TECH to use at work to just knock down the whiskers when I didn't have time at home. So I started experimenting with different blades for the Tech again and since I've learned I have a very tough beard I tried a feather, which I love in my 40s SS. I've heard much praise for this combo in the TECH Tuesday thread. But alas, it wasn't meant for me. I didn't know the Tech could feel so harsh on my skin. I thought this was a mild razor. Yikes! The next blade I tried was an Astra. And guess what? I got a shave to rival the best shaves from my GEM Featherweight. It felt smoother than the FW too. And just in time too because my beard has gotten tougher lately (eating healthier) and the SE blades just weren't cutting it anymore. So now the TECH has gone from a rating of "worst shave" to a rating of "OMG, Butter!!!", my new favorite. I am now officially a Low-TECH shaver, or TECHnocrat, or whatever was (or wasn't) decided on.
There's a lesson in all this: If you try a razor with a couple of blades and think it just isn't for you, don't give up so easy. Maybe you just haven't found that perfect blade for it. Your worst shaver could be turned into a new favorite by a simple blade change.
Now I just need to go find a good handle for that never-been-used Tech Travel razor I found recently.
