Disassembling a DE razor

Can anyone instruct me on how to take apart a DE razor? More specifically, the barn door Gillettes. There is a screw of some kind inside the bottom knob and I'm assuming that's where I would start, but it looks like I need some kind of special tool to stick in there. I tried looking for some threads about this, but the DE forums are so expansive, it's pretty hard to find them.

It's a doable job, but if you are a klutz like me, expect the first few attempts to be highly experimental in nature, and don't count on the patient living through the operation.

Why do you need to get one apart? Sometimes there are other fixes...

Thanks! That's just what I was looking for. I tried using a security bit, but I think I was turning it the wrong way and bent it. Ah well, Ill try again.

The notched screw is left handed, loosens clockwise.

The security bits I have are cheap junk anyway. When I get the time, I'm going to do the screwdriver modification that the one guy did.

Just re-asking Tops question - why are you taking it apart?

There may be a work around so you don't have to.

I have a few of these razors. Some have bad parts and some have good parts. I want to mix and match and put together a complete razor (or 2) that's in great shape.

yeah, I'm keeping everything. I'm also having thoughts of just putting my whole lot of razors on ebay and seeing what happens. Without mixing and matching.
