Dirty Bird vs. Georgetown V?

Has anyone any experience with the newest Georgetown Pottery scuttle (version 5), and in particular can said person compare its performance with the Dirty Bird?

I ordered the G5 2 days ago, but it's shipping to South Korea so I probably won't get it for a little bit. I haven't used the DB, but I'll let you know about the G5 when I can.

I hope this thread gets some attention, because I've had similar questions regarding the DB and Georgetown scuttles. I think the Georgetown looks a little cooler, but from what I've read the DB is a better performer. Can anyone confirm or deny these claims?

I haven't used the Dirty Bird scuttle, but I have been using the Georgetown Pottery G5 scuttle for about 6 months. This version has changed a lot from some of the earlier versions that I have seen reviewed. It has a bigger water reservoir, and, one of the features that they have added that I really like is the lip around the rim of the lather bowl. When I mix the lather, the lip keeps excess lather from spilling out around the bowl, and forces it to fall back in. It keeps the lather warm for the entire time it takes me to shave - 10-15 minutes. The drawback, and this may apply to all of the scuttles, is that it is very heavy and a little awkward to handle. You'll want to set it on the counter while you're mixing up the lather, and be careful when you're cleaning it and drying it off to put it away. It's almost gotten away from me a couple of times. Good Luck

I have the G-5 and to put it plain and simple it simply does not hold enough water and is too thick to keep lather warm for a typical straight shave. A fast DE shave maybe. I use the Oskar scuttle now. It works.

I have the Georgetown G5 and it works fine. As you can see from the previous posts it gets mixed reviews.

The review referenced in an earlier post is for the G3 and the reservoir capacity has been increased (doubled according to Georgetown Pottery).

What I do to make the G5 work is take one of the Pyrex pitchers, microwave 3 cups for 4 minutes, fill the reservoir, fill the lathering area and let the brush soak while my shower, and after the shower pour out the water from the lathering area and use it. Other people empty the reservoir and refill it. I use the microwave because I live in a semi-tropical climate and it doesn't pay to have the hot water heater turned up high enough to get the job done with tap water.

One thing I think we must keep in mind is that the scuttle was a means for people of yesteryear to have hot water to shave when it wasn't readily available from your tap or microwave oven, so I have the impression that we may expect something from our great-grandfather's day that didn't exist.

I have ordered the Dirty Bird 1.5 and the large Moss scuttle and will report on those as well as the Georgetown G5 when they arrive. I don't go on a spending spree for most things, but on this this item I am particularly curious, which is why I wanted to try all three. So stay tuned.
The scuttlebutt I have read from others is that the Georgetown is the most stunning in terms of being a colorful piece of art; the Dirty Bird is best for those who bowl lather; and the Moss is the best for those who prefer to face lather. I'm so new to this retro-shaving game that I haven't determined what kind of scuttle best suits me. I don't know if I prefer bowl lathering or face lathering.

I think I am going to find out that all three companies have market share because each cater to a particular preference by consumers. Kind of like choosing between a Ford or Chevrolet.

I use the Georgetown 5 scuttle everytime I shave, and I enjoy using it for the most part. It keeps my lather plenty warm for what I need but I feel that the inner bowl is a hair too small to work up a good lather. The lip on the edge is handy at keeping the lather in, but I find that it funnels (for lack of a better term) the lather onto the brush handle, making it a messy process. I love the way it looks, it really is a usable piece of art. I am thinking of getting a DB 1.5 to compare, as the inner bowl on the DB looks bigger. Overall, I would recommend it.

I just want to make a rebuttle to California Cajun:

I do agree that scuttles were a means of getting warm lather before hot water came out of taps and that scuttles in general are "yesterdays" technology but I dont agree that they are just that.
Modern scuttles such as Moss scuttle and the Schwarzweisskeramik are just two examples of Modern Scuttles that did not exist decades ago. They have been updated for the 21st century shaver looking for a great shaving experience. Traditional scuttles had little soap pucks placed on top and opening spouts were large and let out a lot of heat. New improvements to scuttle designs changed all that. Bigger water reservoirs and a lathering bowl is a newer concept. With older scuttles, face lathering was the only option.
I just ordered the Schwarzweisskeramik myself and I am looking to buy the moss scuttle too. I cant wait.

Some old school design ideas should never go out of style!

I am very satisfied with my Georgetown G5 and would order a new one without hesitation if (god forbid!) I would break it or something. I paid an arm and leg to ship it over to Europe but still think it was the money well spent.

No doubts there!

Actually, the georgetown Scuttle was the very first scuttle i fell in love with!
Just to bad it gets too many bad reviews. Looks great but I hear performance is spotty

You really can not go wrong with a Dirty Bird. They are hand thrown as well which means no 2 are exactly alike.

True, but they are all exactly awesome. At least, that seems to be the verdict from anybody I've talked to who owned one.

Edit: Owning a 1.5X and brush scuttle, it also happens to be my opinion.

California Cajun nailed it, it is like choosing between a Ford and a Chevy. I have the GT 5, DB 1.5 and the Moss (small), and I like them all. I rotate them as I rotate my soaps, creams and razors!

What I meant to say is that the scuttles we're discussing here ultimately depend on pottery and not machinery to keep the lather warm. I would imagine that each scuttle is somebody's best option or else they wouldn't be in business.

Please post your observations or do a review on the Schwarzweisskeramik. I liked that one very much and Chinmesch uses it on his 30th anniversary video, but didn't want to pay $95 for one scuttle. A favorable review could change my mind. :001_smile

I have the DB 1.5 and large Moss. The DB is the best bowl lathering experience I've come across and the Moss is amazing for face lathering. You can't go wrong with either. I am planning to buy a Georgetown, just to check it out. And they're beautiful, anyway.

I'm wanting to get a custom georgetown for face lathering like the one Ambrose had designed. I emailed them about it but never got a response. Guess I need to call in one of these days...

That is unusual. Lori from Georgetown Pottery was super responsive when I was arranging for my G5 order and delivery.

I didn't think too much of it. I think I sent an email late last Friday and didn't hear back. I just attributed it to the weekend and getting lost in the shuffle. I'll just give them a call one day as it may be easier to place a custom order via phone.

I've had both the G5 and the DB 1.5. The G5 worked fine, but when I got my DB 1.5 there was no comparison between the two.

The G5 is a fine scuttle, and I also have the G4, but the DB out performs the Georgetown hands down. Once I got my DB I sold the G5 on B/S/T.

The G5 worked fine, but the DB works much better. IMHO if you are going to own a scuttle, the DB is the one to get. :thumbup1:
