Honestly, I've never used any of the products you mentioned (although I've used other TOBS creams), so I cannot give an opinion about your starter lineup. It sounds like you are off to a great start, though. Listen to these folks!
As for bowl v. face lathering, I prefer bowl lathering, but that's purely a matter of personal taste for me. It feels more a ritual to whip up the lather in my bowl, and it's not quite as sloppy. Really, those are my only reasons. I've face lathered and done just fine.
My best advice is to stay positive and have fun. There most certainly is a learning curve, but it can be a lot of fun if you just stay optimistic and work on improving. You'll get tons of advice around here, some of it conflicting. Just relax and go with sounds best to you. Do not be afraid to try things. It's just shaving, man. While folks talk about turning their faces to hamburger and other stuff like that, it's gross exaggeration meant in good spirit. Enjoy, and have fun!
