Different Wilkinsons

I was wondering if any of the gents on the forum could explain what the difference is between all 4 or so different types of wilkinsons on the market right now. I've seen classics, economy, brazilian made, indian made Gillette, and maybe more I just don't even know about. Sadly there are not any reviews for many of these blades. Thanks for your help.

Edit: And add to that list the walmart wilkinsons, which are locally available for the bargain price of $5.00. Don't think I'll be trying those anytime soon

I don't know the difference between the 5 types, but don't let the price tag of the walmart wilkies fool you--they're my #1 blade! And I think I got mine for around $2.

$2 is fine and more in line with what the personnas used to cost. But for $5 they have to be as good as feathers or iridiums for me to justify the price

I don't mind using the Wilkinsons that come in the white packaging, brown numbering. I would not say that they are as good as feathers or the iridiums. Locally I can get a 5pk (Made in Germany) for 2.00, still a bit more money than the wilks at Wal-mart. I just get in a habit of picking up a pack a week and just let it accumulate.

I heard the German and UK made Wilkinson are quite nice.

In Oz, I can get the Brazilian from the supermarket for a bit more than Merkur (pack 10). I would put them in the same category than Merkur. Ok blade but too expensive.

When Gillette bought Wilkinson, the competition regulators in the US & Europe forced them to divest the US & European arms to Schick, leaving Asia & Latin America to Gillette/P&G. The Brazilian Wilks we see here in Oz are distributed by P&G. In India the Wilkinsons are positioned as Gillette's lower-end market offering. The Wilkinsons in the US and Europe are Schick blades made in Germany.

What I find odd is that Walmart is selling Wilks at $1.79 for 10, yet when I looked at buying in bulk from European suppliers recently the best price I could find was working out at 30 cents a blade. I could buy Feathers cheaper! I don't know if these are the same blades as Walmart is selling but if so why are Wilks in Europe so damn expensive?

Is there any chance that the Wally Wilks might be "seconds" or otherwise sub-par stock that didn't make the cut for their other labels?

I have only used 1 blade with 2 shaves completed, and I'll be darned if the Wal-Mart Wilks aren't first rate. 2 very nice shaves so far, and I usually use Yellow 7 oçlocks, Iridiums or Feathers.I've been wet shaving for the last 4 years, and have tried countless other blades as well.

So far I would give the blade a solid 8.5/10 :thumbup1:

Don't forget the Wilkinson Sword Premium. From experience I believe they are exactly the same as the Classics, but who knows?

The Premiums seem to have been discontinued and are being replaced with the Classics (same plastic dispenser with white label, different cardboard color).

not that this really matters... but the ones i got, smell wierd. don't judge me for smelling them, but when i opened the pack, i was hit with a plasticy oily smell... i'll have to try the shave tonight...

I have used the ones from Walmart and they are quite good, not as sharp as Feathers. I wonder if the only difference is the packaging.

The ones I got from Walmart come in a pack of 10 in a blade dispenser with no paper, similar to other pharmacy generics.

They are my favorite blade right now and I am glad I can pick up a 10 pack for $1.79 at Wal-Mart. They have replaced my beloved Derby's as my goto blade.

Weird that they're so pricey...does your walmart sells them for $5, or do you find them somewhere else over there?

Walmart sells them for $5. Its weird, because everyone else seems to get them at the same price the personnas were, ~$2. Maybe its just the location, I'll try looking around I guess

Did you ever buy them at that price? At one Wal Mart, they were mispriced. When I scanned them, they were the normal price, but then again, in Michigan they have to use price tags on all the items......

The package states made in China on the Wilkinson blades I bought at Walmart last month.

This was my first blade used in my attempt to use a DE razor again after 30+ years of using disposable or cartridge razors. I have to say the blade is not bad but I will try a few more for comparison. Next up will the a pk made in Korea and sold at the Dollar General, have seen were these are Dorco?

Whoa! Here (NJ) the Wally Wilks are packaged in what I'm reliably informed is a metallic dispenser used for Schick brands outside the USA. The blister pack which holds them states the blades are "Made in Germany". And they are sold at the identical price point -$1.76 + tax- as the US-made Personnas they replace on the shelves. And I bought the last Personnas in my local WM, nyah-ha-ha!

I must say that I miss-spoke. The Wilkinson DE blades are marked made in Germany. It was the Trac II clone cartridges that I bought the same day that were marked made in China.
