What's new

Difference between 2010 & 2011 Mühle R41?

There's 3 versions of the R41. I've used the '10 and find it very efficient but also pretty mild compared to a Merkur 34c. It gets the job done but will require a lot of jaw buffing to get it clean like a 34c.

I have a brand new '11 R41 but haven't used it yet as i'm still trying to perfect my technique. I've also rec'd a FaTip which is very similiar (maybe identical head?) to the '09 R41 and i plan to use that as soon as movember is over. I'm lead to believe the '09 is more agressive than a Gillette New.

*If you have a Merkur 34c or EJ DE89, then go with a FaTip or '11 R41 if you want more agression.

Actually, Muhle's R41 open comb came out in 2009. I don't know why everyone keeps referring to it as the 2010 R41.

James thank you , you got to this correction before i did, very good observation.

Gents, is it possible to see a profile picture of both at eye level. I want to see how the blade exposure on the 2011 differs from the 2009.

Let's see if this one is any better.
I don't have any edge shots.

The blade in the 2011 had a few shaves on it and it had been hanging in the rack for a while... the 2009 had a new blade

Here is a quick and dirty comparison shot. I can take a better one tomorrow if needed.
Both razors are loaded with new blades. Hope it helps.

Perfect.

Much better than my shot, and shows that blade exposure doesn't tell the entire story.

Though the blade exposure is comparable, the gap on the 2011 is positively wicked!

the 2011 r41 shaves from 30 degrees up to 60 degrees instantly according to the holding angle without adjusting systems like progress, futur and slim.

Exactly. I was looking at the difference in the blade angle and the 2011 carries the blade much flatter than the old model... explains why the perceived angle when holding the razor needs to be more shallow.

Xillion, cb91710,

You guys are the best.

Perhaos someone could explain with arrows (using MS Paint or similar) how the 2011 is more aggressive?
which gap?

As you said, the exposure or how much it protrudes is similar between the two. Is it because the guard on the 2011 sits lower than the blade ?

I've cropped the bottom image to show the difference in gap between the two, highlighted by the circles.

Notice how on the blade sits close to the comb on the 2009 R41 and see how the blade sits higher from the comb on the 2011.

Chris, thanks!! I really really appreciate it.

I completely understand. I had a hunch after reading many comments and reviews. But now it makes sense.

Im going to start a thread comparing my TF&H Charlton to a $2 Lord razor.

Why just they don't gave a new name to this new 2011 razor instead of keeping the name R41 and make all this confusion ?

Should be a R42, or maybe AGR41 (for aggressiveness).

Muhle kept the name the same when going to the Fa Tip head pre-2009 R41 to the open comb head 2009 R41. They also did it when going from the Fa Tip head pre-2009 R89 to the current production R89. I kind of understand why they did it; it's because the old model is no longer in production.
