Did I Over Heat

I removed the old knot from this Ever Ready 750Pure Badger handle in a double boiler.

I did not take a "before" picture but I thought it was a typical smooth handle albeit heavily encrusted with old soap.

When I removed it it was rough; I immediately thought that I had overheated it, but after closer examination it looks like it came this way.
The 20 mm (1/5") band immediately above the base is smooth as is the final bevel before the knot that is about 1.5 mm wide. The remainder is evenly textured.

I have never seen a "rough textured" handle before.

Is it normal, or should I start sanding?

I am sorry to say you have over heated it.

Those old plastic and Catlin handles are not meant to handle a lot of heat. I recommend that the steam treatment only be used for modern acrylics and under very limited situations for plastics.

I have a 750 in mint (unused) condition and it is totally smooth.

Start sanding with about 400 grit then work your way up to 1000 and 1500 grit while running water (wetsanding) to keep the particles from scratching it again while sanding.

Good fortune.

Thank you for your prompt reply. I had anticipated your answer and had the tools and materials ready. Here is the nearly finished project.

I don't know what knot you have selected. The one that I have is a very soft high white tipped three band. Ever Ready brushes of that era are marked "Pure Badger" to distinguish from mixed haired or fibered brushes. It does not correlate to the same classifications that we use today. If you want closest to the original knot select a TGN Super Badger. I think you will also have a great brush with a TGN Finest.

Here is a NOS ER750.

I am saving this for a special occasion.

What ever knot you choose, enjoy!

I have measured mine to be just over 21mm. Would you suggest the

20mm x 64mm Super Badger BULB shape. Soft hair, well packed. seen here, or would you go up one size to 22mm?

I estimate that yours has a 50mm loft. Am I close?

Mine is 21 mm knot by 57 mm loft.

I would recommend the 20 mm bulb because that will keep the knot in proportion with the handle.

Keep that loft a lower than original (around 48 - 53 mm) because that Super Badger is very soft.

I look forward to seeing the finished results.

I have not finished polishing it yet, but the knot arrived today and I just stuck it in. It is at approximately a 53mm loft. I think I will wedge it in with tape and try it before permanently attaching it.

Excellent! Soon that will be a night on the town brush! A+

It is the TGN 20mm Super Badger Bulb. I am going to drill the handle this weekend and set the knot lower, probably to 49mm as suggested.

Earlier today I drilled the handle and set the knot at 49.5mm. I will use it tomorrow and report back
