Did I get the right brush?

Hey all, I am a n00b to wet shaving. Never done it, actually, I just received my order from classicshaving.com a few minutes ago. They seem like an honest company, and very helpful and friendly on the phone, but I just wanted to check up on this.

After some small amount of research, I decided I wanted a "Best Badger" brush, so I ordered THIS one. The brush I got says "Pinceau A Barbe" on the box and "Pure Badger" on the brush. The word "Vulfix" appears nowhere. I called, and they explained that this brush IS the one I ordered, it is manufactured by Vulfix, and that the reason it says "Pure Badger" is due to customs issues, and that it really is BEST badger hair.

Are they being straight up with me?

Can you post pics of the brush. I haven't had a brush order go bad from classicshaving.com but if you can post up what you got, maybe we can help better determine and answer for you.

In my dealings with Classic Shaving, I have always felt that they were very honest. I do not think they would set out to mess you up.
Pictures would help. Is the shape of the handle right? Is the knot size and loft appear to be about that claimed?

Is this the brush?
I cannot see 'Vulfix' on the handle.

Did you check the measures?

W

Thanks for replying, guys. It does indeed look like the brush pictured. I can post a pic later. I didn't do any measuring. My major concern was that it said "Pure" instead of "Best," since I decided I wanted Best, and it seemed like Pure was generally cheaper.

But like I said, I generally get a very good feeling from this company, so it's probably good. I'll try and get a decent pic of my new brush, plus the stuff stamped on the handle.:001_smile

I would say for your first brush that you made a good choice. Use it and I bet it will do the job for you. Don't fret over it, in most cases you will have 3-4 other brushes before the year is out, maybe more. You may find that this IS the perfect brush for you. The term pure ,and best are relative. You got a brush with only badger hair either way.

Heh. I hope I don't have 3 or 4 more brushes! The biggest motivator for me entering into wet shaving is to save money. I got tired of spending $25 at a pop for a handful of those Fusion cartridges, so I started doing research which eventually led me to spending $140 at classicshaving.com. I know that's probably nothing to most of you guys on here, but believe me, I didn't tell my wife.

I don't know how subtle the differences are between best badger and pure badger, so it may well not make a difference at all. I was just going by a couple of articles I came across in my surfing which suggested best over pure.

At any rate, it seems like a nice brush. I will be using a brush and a DE this evening for the first time ever....I'm kind of excited about it.

I havent been shaving as long as some on here but Ill put in my two cents.

I started with a Rooney Style 3 Size 1 in Pure and it was a really good brush. I have since then bought a Rooney Style 1 Size 2 in Super Badger it is awesome. Also the badger hair itself will look different. It should roughly have 2 - 3 bands, they call it, where it changes color slightly from one shade to another. Pure badger tends to be one subtle color.

It is like night and day with the two brushes. I could tell immediately the differences between the two. Super Badger will be softer and provide a nicer lather. I gathered this from my own experiences. I hope it helps :thumbup1:

Anyone correct me if I am wrong

I believe the OP is concerned about the difference between Pure and Best, not Super, which Rooneys acutally ranks above their "Silvertip" on their grading scale.

My unsderstanding is that "Best" is "Pure". It has just been hand selected to be the best of the pure.

I use an Edwin Jagger Medium Best and love it. As for the brand, I couldn't read it from the pic of the site but if they say its a Vulfix, it probably is, and could simply be one relabled by Vulfix. It you're not completely satisfied, I would think they would accept a return, especially based on what you've given us. If they don't, I'd do my business elsewhere. There are hunudreds of posts here which can tell you who gives the best customer service. Serveral on a very personal level.

You are totally right about that. Reason I wrote what I did is that I didnt realize that Vintage Blades did not offer a Best Badger. They go from PURE to SUPER (Silvertip) no inbetween BEST available.

I have a couple of nice badger brushes that I rarely use.

I always go for Best, Finest, Silver tip, original Boars hair brush, if there is such an animal. Just joking....I like the feel of Boar with the nice back bone to it and it works great with soaps.

Tutti Frutti, Cheers

Well said Sir: My only advice is to stop reading these forums. The only hope for you is to never read another line from these maniacs, who constantly buy and sell shaving gear. I once bought a str8 razor to save money. You know only one blade ever, no replacements. Well let me tell ya...............

But really, welcome to the B&B house of insanity. It's contageous, there ought to be a warning label.:lol::lol::lol::lol::lol:

Thanks for the welcome, everyone! :)

So, Boar, eh? Is this one of those things like Mac vs PC, Canon vs. Nikon, about which flame wars are fought daily on the board? :001_tongu

Shaving Tool,

More info about your brush can be found on Vulfix's site http://www.vulfixoldoriginal.com/products-detail.asp?CatID=1&SubCatID=26&ProductID=19

Part of their London series. It will probably be a great intro into shaving brushes.

If you missed the above post, Sueto found your brush, it is a Vulfix, their London Series. Now you just have to get clarification on the "Best" part. As I stated above, Best is the Best of Pure. I'm just not sure why they advertise it as best when the manufacturer only lables it "Pure". If I was selling it, I wouldn't label it "Best" unless the manufacturer labled it as well such as Edwin Jagger does with theirs.

Nice picture quality too!

Yeah, I saw that, and it seems to indicate that the brush is actually pure badger and not best badger. I'm sure it will be a very good brush, but I've been led to believe that BEST badger meant something very specific (like where on the badger's coat the bristles are harvested from), and this was advertised as a best badger brush, but perhaps is not. The claim from the customer service person I talked to was that it WAS best badger, but US customs regs required that it be labeled PURE badger. In other words, that "pure" was being put to different semantic use.

Meh, I'm not going to belabor it. I'm too eager to start using it, so I won't send it back. But it's slightly annoying that it appears to have possibly been false advertising.

Nice picture quality too!
Thanks! Shot with a Nikon D3 and Nikkor 105mm VR Micro. I'm as nutty about camera gear as many of you guys are about shaving gear. :wink2:
