Diary of the Curious

SOTD 06.03.2023

@rbscebu Finally I did it, even remembered to make a picture of it. :straight:
First straight razor shave, or more correctly first right cheek SR shave.
Started very carefully and light on the right cheek. The angle was too shallow at some places but was able to achieve acceptable WTG on the cheek. Then tried the left cheek but as I have 2 big moles there I could not go around them with the right hand and gave up. Tried holding the razor in the left hand but it felt very uncontrolled and I didn't dare to touch my skin with it.
The razor, honed by @rbscebu, feels very sharp when I get the angle right but I feel I'll need a lot of practise until I start feeling confident in what I'm doing.

Continued the shave with the Merkur Progress.
The rest of participants:
- Persona Platinum blade (2nd use)
- LinkIdea bowl
- Omega Proraso brush
- Tabac soap
- Nivea Sensitive balm
- Tabac EDC

Smooth and easy shave. WTG on 4.5 setting in the Progress, ATG on 3/2.5.
DFS -> BBS, or 9.8/10

SR shaving WTG normally needs a steeper angel than XTG. ATG requires the shallowest angle.

What do you do with your DE razor around your moles? I don't have any on my shaving area (now) do I cannot advise what to do.

I usually lift the one end of the DE razor, so it goes above them. And also I shave towards them in all direction. At some point I will try the same with the SR, but don't feel confident yet. This requires quite a steady and precise hand. The good thing is that I have better visibility with the SR.

I had no idea! I thought it was use sharpest edge possible and ride the spine and pull skin tight. Thank you!
Some find that the sharpest edge is not for them. They may prefer a less keen edge which may give them a more "comfortable" shaving experience. My thoughts are that it depends on what you start with and develop your technique on. I started with super-keen edges blades and that is what I still prefer, particularly when performing a CdM.

Shaving angle depends on a lot of personal variables that only the SR shaver can best determine. Generally, the keener the edge, the flatter the angle should be.

Skin stretching and how hard you stretch is again determined best by the shaver and his/her face and preferred shaving technique.

There are no hard and fast rules in SR shaving. Everyone's face is different, thankfully, otherwise we would all be as exceptionally good looking as @FarmerTan.
