What's new

Dexter

Haven't seen last night's episode yet, but the last line of the previous episode sent a chill up and down my spine. However, I find this to be the weakest season to date. It's just been plodding along, and the main villain isn't half as menacing as the villains from previous seasons.

In fairness, it also hasn't had as awesome a guest star as John Lithgow and Jimmy Smits.

Interesting. I would have said that the seasons have gotten better and better, except perhaps that the first was stronger than the second.

Lithgow last year was amazing. Julie Stiles this year is really growing on me. She seems very convincing to me, and it is a role that calls for a lower key approach to be that effective. It would be very easy to take it over the top. I like the current villian as a villian. Kind of the dark side of self help. I am not sure I am convinced there is a dark side of self help, but I would not be surprised if there were personalities doing self help that were psychopathic and narcissistic to near that degree. The mask of sanity, if you would. Lithgow had something of that with the normal family, etc., but then he had the intense religion as sort of a tell or excuse or something. No dis to religion, it it just that intense religiousity can show up with mental illness. Whereas self help guy outwardly is very together, although arguably manipulative. Again, takes a lower key performance.

I haven't seen the latest episode yet. I am usually at least a week behind.

So far I find this season to be different than the others. The other seasons have had a very clear and to the point "This is Dexter's nemesis for the season". This one seems to take a tad slightly off hand approach from his usual antagonist. I like it but it seems like Dexter is getting worse at what he does instead of better. There is way too much going on this season that he is clueless about.

So what did we think of the season, not that it is over? I suppose we should have a spoiler alert!!!!

I actually liked the season quite a bit. But the finale seemed rushed and unsatisfying.

I agree. I had heard that they hadn't even decided on an ending as they were waiting to hear if the show would get a 6th season, but it still seemed rushed.

It will probably be like last season and this one where it goes right into it from the previous season. Cant wait now that this season is over.

I feel slightly unsatisfied by the ending, but overall LOVED the season. Can't wait till next year.

Do any of you guys read the books? I think it's pretty interesting that the book dexter and the tv show dexter are so different. Well, besides the whole serial killer thing...

The last Dexter book was pretty decent. The second one was the best, by far!

Yeah me too. While a slower season it was starting to build really nicely and then...wham... it's over and it wasn't even that exciting.

The end about the Lumen's dark passenger leaving.... I hope this doesn't set up the series to follow the books. Book 3 to me was complete tripe. Book wise they'd built up the circumstances of Dexter's "becoming" and then suddenly he's possessed by the devil and it leaves him. PAH , that's like saying Hannibal Lector or Aaron Stampler ( my other two favourite literary psychos ) aren't really evil, they're just possessed.

Again I'm also wondering if the kids coming to stay for the Summer relates to what happens in the books as well ( they have their own dark passengers after their abusive father and Rita's death ).

And Jordan Chase didn't have a patch on the Trinity Killer ( or Dexters brother or Lila even ) :001_rolle

First book was fantastic, second book ok , third absolute cr@p ( see above comment ) , the fourth getting a bit back towards the dry humour of the first couple of books.

To me the books have become to formula based. Killer in town -> Dexter hunts killer => Killer captures Dexter/Dexter's family/Dexter's friend - > rescue by Dexter/Dexter's family/Dexters's friend. ( Though I suppose on reflection the same could be said for the series ).

I'm actually enjoying the TV series better than the books which for me doesn't happen very often.

Of course YMMV

I listen to most books on tape rather than actually read them, and I know I got one or two of the Dexter books. I listened to parts, but they did not grab me. I should really try again.

Amazing. I cannot imagine this series not getting a 6th season, if the main characters were up for it. I would say that it is the best show on TV at this point, even given flaws in the just finished season. In restrospect, the ending seems even more rushed and abrupt than it did after first seeing it. But there were some real high points this season.

I am not sure that Jordan Chase really made sense as a character. Somehow I never got much sense of any actual charisma from him.

I thought Julie Stiles really developed her character. In part that explains why the endng is so jarring. It did not seem consistent with the character to me.

Michael C Hall just gets better. Jennifer Carpenter kills, although, again, the ending seemed too pat. I thought the relationship with Desmond Harrington was very true to life, and at the same time non-cliche. In the past, I think her romantic relationships have been kind of ridiculous. Peter Weller actually made a heck of a villian. Utterly credible.
