Derby of Doom

Why oh why did I stick a Derby in my innocent C4 Flair-Tip and go to work on my mug? I know my brand is Iridium and an Astra SP will at least leave me in one piece but oh no, I had to experiment! Dropped that blade in the med cab slot and swear I heard the devil curse me when it hit bottom.

Hurry up, Ireland guy, get me that Iridium order. I cut myself more than an Emo tween in a bad mood. Yikes!

Try another razor? Derby didn't do it for me in two of mine. Loaded one into my Treet Delrin and it was a good match.

I don't know if I'll buy more Derby blades, but I won't waste the three I have left.

I've used several Derby's in my Progress and Bakelite and have had great shaves. I hope I never run into any problems with them as of now I am happy with them. I like them better than the Lord Platinums in my blade sampler I received a while back.

Don't like Derby's much either, but it seems to give me acceptable shaves in my old type.
But it can't beat an Iridium.

Is it just me or did Derby get worse?

I can't speak to the 'old' horizontal packaging for Derby blades, but I've found the vertical package blades to be just fine. As a matter of fact, outside of Feathers, I like Derbys the best out of any blade I've tried. There have been a flood of 'Derbys are crap' posts lately, and I think that the phenomenon may be in large part due to posts on this forum. People reading about how vertical Derbys are bad and then internalizing it. One new guy got a single nick and decided that meant the blades were trash. Others may genuinely be getting bad blades, but this isn't an occurrence that is limited to Derbys. While going through my sampler pack, the first Red IP I used was very subpar. I decided to use another and discovered that the first was just a fluke.

Either way, I am of the opinion that swearing off a brand because of one blade/shave is not the way to go.

Hey Hat -

I got Derbys in a sampler pack and have used about 7 of the 10 so far, but I didn't think they were bad. Like Astras rather better, but the Derbys never hurt me...seemed just sort of "middle of the road average". Mine were the "vertical" packaging if I dig what is meant.

Man I remember the days when it was all Derby Praise, how quickly things change. Never used a Derby myself. BTW Blue Birds are Very Consistent and comparably priced IMHO.

How many scars did they give you, Maxman? :001_huh:

I first learned on Derby's. I spent 6 days a week for almost a year using them in a variety of razors.
At one time I had to cut back on shaving because on the left side of my face I was getting irritation. Bumps and nicks fairly often. Not all the time, but often enough.

My Dad ordered a sample pack of blades and let me try some of each.
When I hit the feathers, my problems disappeared.

I've had my run in with Derby's. I don't like them.

I know, because of all the praise I tried at least six of those. It made me understand YMMV for sure. Very consistant but hardly a shave. I am tempted to try the version that everybody seems to be complaining about; any change can only be for the better for me!

Derbys are a great blade. They are inexpensive whilst not being cheap. They are readily available and they shave well. What more could you want from a blade. There are a lot worse blades out there. All of this vertical vs horizontal is IMHO a load of old donkey plop. It is just a piece of cardboard it doesn't effect the shave. I have had bad shaves when using a Derby and not once has the blade been at fault. Blades are made by the million, all the same. The blade is a baseline and not a variable. The OP stated that his blade of choice is either an Iridium or an Astra, so he is not used to the Derby and his technique has not adapted yet. The main variable in any shave is the human holding the razor, normally it is down to not lathering well enough, not prepping well enough or just a simple failure of technique.

And breathe...
