Derby Lemon Review

Continuing my shave soap and cream reviews;

This is my review of Derby Lemon Shaving Cream. Products used during the shower and shave were as follows;
  1. Stirling Soap Conifer Bath Soap
  2. Dollar Shave Club Face Wash
  3. The Body Shop Tea Tree Face Scrub
  4. Derby Lemon Shaving Cream
  5. Q-Shave scuttle
  6. Stirling Soap Finest Badger Shave Brush
  7. Rockwell 6S on R5
  8. Feather (2nd use)
  9. Gentleman Jon’s Alum Block
  10. Bandido Aftershave Cologne Turkish Version
  11. Nivea Sensitive Shave Balm
  12. Old Spice Endurance Deodorant
The following process is what I used for my SOTD with the Derby Lemon Shave Cream. This is also the same process I use with all my shave creams;
  1. While I brushed my teeth I made sure the scuttle ran under the hot water
  2. I filled the water hollow and the lathering bowl portion of scuttle with hot water
  3. Rinsed brush with hot water
  4. Placed brush in scuttle
  5. Took shower
  6. Dumped scuttle water from both water hollow and lathering bowl area
  7. Refilled water hollow with fresh hot water
  8. Took out brush and rung out excess water
  9. Squeezed a dollop of Derby Lemon into scuttle
  10. Started working the cream in the bowl
  11. Added hot water via finger tips until desired lather is produced
  12. Lather
  13. Cleaned my glasses with finger tip amount of lather
  14. Waited another minute to let the lather work its magic
  15. Pass I WTG
  16. Lather
  17. Pass II Lower Jaw to Nose
  18. Lather
  19. Pass III Chin to Ear
  20. Check for pick ups (None Needed)
  21. Scrub face with some of the leftover lather
  22. Rinse face
  23. Apply alum to Face
  24. Rinse Alum Block
  25. Clean equipment
  26. Rinse off Alum from face
  27. Dry off
  28. Apply Aftershave Cologne
  29. Apply Deodorant
  30. Apply Lots of Aftershave Balm
Now for my thoughts. Just a heads up. Due to my process of bowl lathering unless the soap/cream is just horrible I always get a great lather. It takes longer, but the control of how much water is used really helps dial in the lather just right. Some soaps/creams take longer than others. So it is hard for me to find a soap/cream I dislike.
  1. Time to Lather
    1. Just when you think it isn’t going to lather properly, BOOM! Nice lather
  2. Quality of Lather
    1. Nice quality
  3. Cushion
    1. Good Cushion
  4. Slickness
    1. Whilst lathered
      1. In line with shave foams such as Barbasol
    2. After Pass (Bare Wet Skin)
      1. Dried out rather quickly compared to other products
        1. Some slickness once the area is moistened again
        2. If pick ups were needed the area would need to be moistened and lathered
  5. Scent
    1. Okay
    2. Like a dark lemon
    3. Not as strong as you might think
  6. Rinse
    1. Rinsed clean with more effort than most
  7. Post Shave
    1. Not bad
      1. Dries you out a bit
      2. Skin does need attention
      3. An aftershave balm is a must
It’s an okay cream. I got it for about a dollar from a local vendor, so the price was right. I can’t say I was expecting more, and it did punch well above it’s weight for just a dollar. I was able to get a good shave with this, but nearly not as good as I could get with other products. Derby’s actual hard soap, like the shave stick and the shave puck (tub) are a much better value and better product. I will probably PIF this out to a friend of mine who only likes creams. Just so it is clear, I used this product only 10 hours after a previous shave. This is why I do not do an ATG shave. (Swapping from night to day shift. Then, swapping back. All in a 48 hour period.) As I am typing this I am applying Nivea Creame, the original, to my face. A very close shave, but painful.

I will not be buying more for storage purposes. I will not be buying more for any reason unless someone close to me wants me to get them a tube. If you can get it for cheap, it isn’t bad. Just make sure you wait 24 hours or more between shaves before using this product.
