What's new

decision time which HDTV from these 3?

I am a samsung owner, not that particular model, but still own a samsung. The picture quality is great but I had a problem with the resistors in mine. After a google search I found that Samsung puts lower volt resistors in theirs and eventually they swell and sometimes split open. Basically, this made the power up on my TV very slow and got to the point it would take 10 minutes to cycle thru the power up before it would actually turn on. I ordered new resistors online, spent about $10 (ordered more just in case) got my soldering gun out and fixed it myself in about 25 minutes. Of course this happens after the warranty period so no help from samsung. I really do like my samsung but I wasn't expecting to have to fix any problems after dumping $1400 into a TV after only 1.5 years.

I have the Samsung LN52A850.Love the tv and I have never had a problem with it.
Sure hope I do not have the same resistors.

They may have had enough complaints that they fixed the problem. When I googled it I couldn't believe the # of people that had this problem with all kinds of different samsung models. The good news is that it really isn't that hard of a fix.

I love my Panasonic.. though mine is only a 40in as the room it goes in is not that large and so anything more would have actually degraded my TV experience. I found when I was shopping for an HDTV, just like a lot of things with shaving, it was more about personal preference for the sets I was looking at. The main reason I got the one I did was it came with an Ipod docking station so my daughter can watch her videos from her Ipod on the TV or play her music through the TV if she is studying.

Panasonic. I just bought a 50" G25 and the picture, color, and black levels are outstanding.

I almost bought the S2 but in a bright room such as mine the G25 with its infinite black panel was the better choice for me.

I have a Samsung, and it's been fine. Great picture and no probs with power after 2 years. I'm sure Panasonic would be fine too. It's a TV. Get over it. We live in an age where the quality of almost everything we can buy is better than our parents or grandparents could, and we get stuff for so much cheaper. And yet we nitpick over Consumer Reports ratings of everything. If you had a panasonic, get another. A samsung won't be a transformative experience.

A few years ago, I purchased a 46" Sony Bravia. After we started taking the bulky, 180 lb CRT TV to the stairs to take it to the bedroom, my wife said why don't we just sell this one (the bulky one) and buy another, maybe a 40" HD. We can use that one in the bedroom. Well, that gave me the opportunity to go and buy a 40" Sony I had my eye on at the store. It was only 720 resolution but it was sitting next to a 1080 and it looked better. If fact, I still prefer THAT TV in the bedroom over the one downstairs.

No, this isn't a Sony advertisment, I am only saying look at each TV, sit infront of each for a few minutes and make your decision based on what you see and like.

Here are a couple of basic equations to figure out the best size for the room you are in too

Minimum size= Viewing distance/3

Maximum size=Viewing distance/1.5

the Samsung 55" should be delivered Thurs..

my Daddy/Mommy and Grad-Daddy/Mommy are long dead so can't get them to give me their opinion.

Mate, if possible, you should go to the nearest electronics retailer that stocks those models and take a look at them in person. Picture quality is subjective, so the only thing you will be able to find out from the forums is probably reliability and both Samsung and Panasonic make high quality sets. I personally own a 50inch Viera plasma and never had a problem with it (had for about a year now).

EDIT: I own a TH-50PZ80A.
