Decant Shop Trial No.3 - Chanel Egoiste

Good evening gents. After some banter on my threads about Guerlain and Chanel and the decants I purchased in those scents, I agreed with some members to make a few threads detailing the experiences. Though I have been around wet shaving for nigh a decade now I have never really been a fragrance fan. At least as far as perfume type scents go. So here are some of my initial thoughts about Egoiste copied from one of the earlier posts. Like the rest of these I will update them every two weeks or so til I run through the samples. Egoiste should have been No.2 but I forgot I tried it and made Hammam Bouquet No.2 instead. Sorry for the confusion.

(Copied from earlier thread)
Last night whilst handling the decants I managed to squeeze/leak a bit of Chanel Eqoiste onto my finger. I was trying to barely pump the sample's atomiser enough to just make a drop appear but of course sprayed a bit too much. I was immediately hit by the "I've smelled this before" hammer. What was it? Think blast you, you've smelled this before. You know you have the fragrance in your shave den somewhere. After a good while of this I put it out of my mind and went about the evening's affairs and trundled off to bed. This morning after the shave I immediately went back to the Egoiste. I gave myself a shot on each pulse point of the neck area and was again reminded I have smelled something almost identical. Then the light went on. Trumper Sandalwood! The opening blast of fresh(orange/citrus?) along with a sandalwood heart is superb. Egoiste dries down a bit differently and a bit drier than Trumper's scent and shows a bit of cedar through the day but the top notes are eerie in their similarities.

I have described Trumper Sandalwood as a great bridge scent. By bridge I mean something that is modern for younger chap while at the same time completely void of the unholy generic water/fresh stuff that most scents the last twenty years have become. I have not priced Egoiste but Trumper Sandalwood runs about $60-65 for a 50ml atomiser. If Egoiste comes in a 3.4oz bottle for under $100 then you can do the math. Personally I would look to Chanel's smaller 2.7oz. versions for less pain in the cheque book. And I find Trumper's 50ml bottle will last me a long time since I do not use full on perfume/colognes every day. While you shouldn't make any long term judgements about a scent based on a single use I can say this is a rather nice scent. Safe for work, good for church, or even casual evening wear. It is a great distraction from the mindless wafts from most of the department store scents.

I can only reiterate what I have said before. Trumper Sandalwood and Egoiste are excellent fragrances. Certainly not daring or completely unusual but most assuredly different than the actor/designer stuff most men wear these days. Bright, a bit heady and with good staying power I have received nothing but complements with these two. Egoiste is so far the best male fragrance I have smelled from Chanel.

Cheers, Todd

Interesting you make the Trumper's connection - I mix Rose and Sandalwood Skin Foods to make an aftershave balm to complement the mighty Egoiste, which I consider the best frag (and easily the best designer frag) currently on the market.

Alongside Rive Gauche and Terre d'Hermes, Egoiste stands as one of the more original designer fragrances I own that are still available today.

For some reason, my nose is really sensitive to rose. If it's in a frag, it seems like that's all I can smell. I'm not particularly fond of it either, so Egoiste really annoys me. I do think it's classy though.

Timmy Dee. If you ever smell Trumper Sandalwood you will be astounded at the likeness. I agree with you. Egoiste is very good.

Cheers, Todd

I've tried it, but I get a lot more rose (and sandalwood, surprisingly) from Egoiste. The Trumper is very good, no question, (as are the vast majority of their fragrances) and I get people saying it's more wearable than the Chanel, but I find Egoiste extremely wearable and am tempted to stock up on it in a big way.

I definitely see the similarities, as they both have that creamy sandalwood note that I really enjoy, but the more prominent rose in Egoiste wins it for me. For me it's the original all the way.

I was lucky enough to land a small decant of Egoiste Cologne Concentre and think it is one of the most incredible scents I have ever smelled. I'll probably never buy a bottle at the price it goes for, but have been thinking about the regular Egoiste.

Another update. This will be brief. Chanel Egoiste is a very good scent. I have compared this to Trumper Sandalwood and I stand by that comparison. Egoiste is drier and more of the cedarwood projects itself as it dries down and works to completion as the scent fades. Trumper's scent is stronger up front, richer, creamier, a bit sweeter and 'rests' on my skin better. I prefer the Trumper but this is only subjective opinion. For those who have tried Trumper and found it maybe a bit too sweet or projection a bit much, the Egoiste is right down your alley. I have oft referred to Trumper sandalwood as a great bridge scent. Modern but with none of that ridiculous ocean water 'accord' we hear so much about. Definitely closer to 1950 than 2010. Men of all ages could wear it and it works with ties or casual clothing. Very versatile. In essence it bridges generations and lifestyles. Versatility is its mainstay. Add Egoiste to the same list. Only drier and without the slight orange scent in the background. Chanel is still Chanel. They can and do make some darned good scents.

Cheers, Todd

Thought it was just me who only smelled rose in Egoiste! No sandalwood or anything except rose.

I've tried new and old Egoiste, and now have some of the Concentree formulation. I dislike the new Egoiste, but the original is excellent for a couple of hours. Then it really weakens, and I don't think it's worth the money. The Concentree, by contrast, seems to go on weak and then get stronger, so I have to be careful about not using too much. After and hour or so it really starts to get going, and the ingredient quality is excellent. It's a fairly unique composition, so you either like it or not, but I think a lot of people may be turned off to it because they apply to much.

It's always interesting to see other's response to scent. I blind bought a bottle of Egoiste several years ago and was initially underwhelmed. It has grown to be one of my favorites. And though I love rose and sandalwood it's the rosewood and particularly the cinnamon that stand out in this one to me.

I get cinnamon, sandalwood, and some vanilla in the drydown. The opening for me is kind of a slightly animalic citrus combo.
Still my favorite designer fragrance.
