DE vs. the Gem

I've been wet shaving now since Feb. and have bought 20-25 DE razors. About a week ago I decided to add a few Gems to my little collection and just for fun I went out and purchased a pack of treet single edge blades and have used the gems for the past couple of shaves. I was not ready for the results that I got from them, I have gotten the best shaves I have ever had. There was no irritation, no razor burn, no nicks, only the best shaves ever. I hate to put down my pricey little superspeeds and adjustable ones. Am I missing something here? Was there something I was doing wrong with my gillettes. I was getting great shaves with the DE razors but the Gems are giving me Tony the Tiger Great shaves. A while back I picked up a KROPP straight for 10 bucks a the local antique shop, I'm thinking about sending it off to be properly honed and stropped to see how that one goes. Has anyone else had this experience??

Some really like GEMs and can get fantastic shaves with them. I have a few, but I can't get a half decent shave to save my life. They have led me to want to try an injector razor though.

Without a doubt, single edge razors can give d/e razors a run for their money.:wink:I have several in my rotation. The 1912 Junior and the 1907 Damaskeene being my favourites.I just wish ther were more types of s/e blades available.

GEMs tend to suprise people sometimes

keep it up, and as your technique improves, youll love it even more, and possibly catch GRAD (gem razor acquisiton disorder).

I KNEW Dave was going to catch this one.

I was given a Gem micromatic along with several DE's. When I tried ye olde Gem I fell in love. Even useing the cheap-o CVS blades it gives the most remarkable shaves. The cloest thing I have in a DE is a 1957 SS that belonged to my grandfather.( I made several post on that razor) That is a very close race, but the Gem gives a better shave easier. Hands down.

I also use a straight some. I would encourage you to try your hand at it. It is fun, and just a plain manly thing to do.

Thanks to Dave for letting me know how good they were when I first asked.

For me I do not see where they could be better then the CVS I have. I picked up a 5 pack of treet blades last week and they do not do as well for me at all.

Maybe I can get someone to offer me a few to try  and I'll pay postage and throw in a little for the blades as well.

Send me a pm with an addy and I will send you some of the cvs blades . Can get them out on Wednesday prolly as I am on shift at the casino till then.

I'll pick up some from cvs in the morning and if they don;t shave as well as the treet brand I'll send them your way. By the way how many shaves do you get from your single edge blades??

I have been getting 3. It would probably go more I am sure, but that is my routine change time on all my razors. Not OCD about it but that is the norm.

Excuse me for creeping in your thread but I would to ask the following.
I think I'm going to try this Push button GEM. Is it wise to use the blades included or is the advice to use younger (better) blades. Ted Pellas?

That is a nice looking razor. I have only used newer blades. But have been told the newer ones are better then ones that have been sitting around awhile as the metals these days are better. If it was mine I would get newer ones. I hope you enjoy the shave I love my Gem micromatic.

I was a fan of DE's until Dave's enthusiasm for older SE's got me curious. I tried a 1912 Gem and then a 1907 Gem from my collection . . . Now I'm hooked. I can't see myself going back to DE's again.

Prior to about three weeks or so ago, I had tried many different DE's, injectors and some of the more recent model SE's, but for whatever reason, I hadn't tried the old Gems . . . I've now found that to have been a serious oversight.

I've only been using the drugstore ASR blades, but even with them, I am getting the best shaves that I've had from any razor.

Regards,
Tom

I don't have OCD either, but I do have CDO, it's just like OCD but in alphabetical order.
