Anyone have any strange tricks they have come up with shaving?

I’ve found feather blades give me the closest shave but by the time I get to the ATG pass the edge will be less than the melting butter smooth.

One trick I’ve started to use my newly loaded blade per specific side. I will do WTG and XTG using only one side of the blade. On the ATG I use the fresh edge. It’s unmatched for ease of cutting ATG so far.

If I don’t do this ATG feels rough on my neck. With blades less sharp than feather the hairs don’t even get cut all the way.

What are your odd tricks?

I have a couple of razors that experience blade alignment issues "every now and again". I find that if I place the cap down on a flat surface, load the blade, press the base plate down tightly onto it, then screw on the handle, it eliminates the alignment issue "most" of the time.
Also a lot less likely to cut your fingers that way than if you try to do it in mid air.

If my soap puck is loose in the bowl then I remove it and rub it on my damp face prior to face lathering, thus using it like a shave stick. And........ I get a better shave when I am not wearing my spectacles and cannot quite see what I am doing. And...... I remove my left slipper while shaving but keep the right one on - I have always done it and now it feels odd to wear either both slippers or neither. I swear if I wear my spectacles and both slippers then I get a terrible shave, but remove the specs and my right slipper and I have shaving nirvana. It works for me - give it a try, what have you got to lose?

I really pre-shave, rub in something to my face (usually the soap) and really massage it in then continuing wetting my hands a little until it foams well. I leave it on and then lather right over it. My first pass I have to rinse the blade well but it's not even a worry. I get a great result. Even when I shave every day this gives me a real benefit.

One, is the so-called "Gillette Slide" .... Well, I invented this myself, long before I ever discovered there was such a thing called "the Gillette Slide" .!
Whatever the background, its a very efficient technique, making a big difference for achieving a smooth shave with no irritation.

Another trick I use on a regular basis is a touch-up pass (3rd or 4th pass), with no lather, and on completely dry skin.
I have discovered that this is a very efficient way to get to all the places that need touching up, while avoiding irritation.

My procedure is this:
After second or third regular pass, I rinse liberally with cold water, then apply alum block liberally.
Then I let alum sit on my face, while I rinse lather off my brush thoroughly, and dry the brush well.
I then rinse off alum with cold water, dub my face with dry towel, then air-dry my my face completely, "fanning" my face with my hands.
Then I am ready for the touch-ups: on dry skin, I use the razor with just cold water on it, using what is known more widely as the "Gillette slide" technique, on all the spots where I sense just a slight amount of remaining stubble (using my left hand to feel out where I need the touch ups).

The end result as an absolutely clean "baby bud smooth" face, every time I use this touch-up procedure, no matter which blade and razor I use, and with no irritation whatsoever.

So there you have it ...! My little secret as to how I achieve a perfect shave ....!
