DE Shaving

I am new to DE razors, I wonder if someone might recommend a good double edge to begin with. I think I would like to look for a Gillette of some sort, perhaps someone might point me in the right direction, Thanks... Al Newman

Don't worry, we'll give our best suggestions. First, welcome to B&B. If you want a vintage razor, a 1940's style Super Speed is a nice mild razor to start with. If you want new, the Edwin Jagger DE89 is recommended often.

Welcome! You'll have a pretty big range to chose old and new. Although I am pretty partial to Gillette Techs, Super Speeds are plentiful and well proven. Half of the fun is trying them all:biggrin1:

Both good choices. Also a Gillette Tech or a Merkur HD are very good razors for beginners.

I started with a Merkur 23C, because I wanted a longer handle. It was a good razor to begin with;, not overly aggressive, but not too mild, either.

My current razor (which is my first razor as I have only been using a DE for 2 weeks) is one of the DE razors Maggard Razors sells under their own name. I am not sure how it compares to other razors, but from what others have told me it is similar to the Edwin Jagger DE89 but easier on the wallet.

what you really need is to learn this one very important acronym

YMMV ( your mileage may vary. )

my favorite razor ?
It may work differently in your situation, or be different in your experience.

My favorite razor blade ?
It may work differently in your situation, or be different in your experience.

my favorite soap ?

But that having been said starting with a mild razor is always a good idea.
so all the razors above are good suggestions.

The people here do know what they are talking about but
It may work differently in your situation, or be different in your experience.

My favorite gillette tto is the red tip folowed by the SS and Flares and finally the adjustables. And the red tip not too aggressive for a beginner at least in my opinion.

I suggest a slim adjustable set at 1-3 while you're starting out. The slim, in my opinion, is the best option out there and it allows you to grow.

Thank you for the advice everyone, I went on eBay and bought a Gillette flare tip? They said it was a media razor and it was very inexpensive so I bought it, now all I have to do is find some blades to go with it… I have some Topaz blades when I have no idea how good day are as I have no razor to put them in yet. I guess we'll say… Thank you so much for the fine welcome and God bless

Nice choice. Very forgiving. And as you say not too expensive. As you get more comfortable you can try some sharp blades. The flare tip gives a nice shave with the feather, polsilver or personna blue but give it some time.

I think you will enjoy the flare tip. Congrats!
+1. I should warn you that you are now likely to become addicted to collecting razors (like most of the rest of us), so I would suggest that your next acquisition be a Gillette Adjustable, either Slim or Fatboy, depending on your preference. That will allow you to do some experimentation without having to change razors.
