DE shaving rash.

Since starting wet shaving I have only ever used a straight. I recently decided yo try DE shaving, not for any other reason other than just why not!?

I should probably say the reason I started wet shaving with a straight was because of evil ingrown hairs :mad3:. Since shaving with a straight the evil ingrown hairs disappeared .

After shaving with my DE for the first time this week (ATT M-1) the ingrown hairs have come back!! (This is all around base of my neck where the hair grows upwards and my work shirt comes into contact with it) I have to say the shave was pretty good, found the angle quickly and got a nice close shave, not bbs but in-between say a Mach 3 and my straight.

My question I guess is are the ingrown hairs a side effect of DE shaving vs straight shaving? (Has anyone else experienced this)

is is it technique?

I read somewhere (can't remember where) that ingrown hairs can be aggravated by shaving against the grain. Something about the hair being cut so short that the hysteresis pulls the hair below the level of the skin so that the sharp end of the hair digs into the skin as the hair grows. I don't know how true this is because I shave against the grain on one of my passes, but I don't have an ingrown hair problem. At any rate, you might just try a WTG pass and two XTG passes and see if it helps.

Agreed: shaving ATG tends to produce ingrown hairs, at least for me. I do 2 WTG passes on my cheeks. The tricky part is my neck/chin/jawline, where I usually have to do 3 passes: N-S, S-N, touch-up ATG. I have also found that exfoliating my face and neck in the shower with loofah gloves has worked with the above approach to eliminate ingrown hairs while giving me a BBS shave.

i guess its its because with my straight I can do a WTG and an ATG pass on my lower neck and XTG everywhere else. I just assumed I would be able to do the same with a de!

Another possibility is that you are unconsciously using more pressure with the safety razor than the straight...
