DE Shaving Cheaper???

I've read that DE shaving is alot cheaper. BWAH HA HA. That's a good one. Since starting DE shaving. I've become obsessed with with the razors. I've bought many, some for collecting, some for shaving. Besides different blades, bowls, soaps, creams and brushes. I really think shaving with the newest sensation 6 blade atra style razor with $12 dollar blades is definitely cheaper. At least my wife thinks so.

It is cheaper, if (and it's a big 'if') you can restrict yourself to one razor, one or two (not two dozen) soaps/creams and one brush.

It's hardly fair to compare with cartridge shaving unless you buy every available variant of the razor in question and every variant of cans of goop.

It's actually a fair comparison, as the point is that with DE shaving, you feel compelled to purchase different razors, soaps, creams, brushes, and other products, whereas with the cartridges, you won't find the experience pleasurable enough to seek refinement of that displeasure.

When you register with B&B, you should get a package sent out to you:
100 Astras, 1 Superspeed, an HD, some MWF, Proraso and an EJ BBB.
Next, your name should be sent to every single online supplier with a warning to sell you nothing apart from blades for the next 10 years!

Yes, but then you would have Astras.

My article was just a little attempt at tongue in cheek humor. I agree if you buy one DE, find a blade that works well with that razor. Then it would be quite a bit cheaper.

For shaving 'hobbyists' like the ones on this forum, it's definitely not cheaper, but definitely a better value. I consider myself frugal, in that I don't like to waste money, but don't mind spending good money on things of quality that give me pleasure.

My money spent on pre-DE gear was basically wasted. Overpriced corporate products that gave lousy shaves, ultimately destined to be permanently entombed in the landfill.

Now, I enjoy shaving, get pretty nice shaves, get to play with neat old razors, and do business and interact with interesting people. That's money well-spent.

On the other hand, I did think I was going to save money when I started this. There really should be a disclaimer somewhere

I still think if you look at it like a Per shave kind of thing,
even if you switched out blades every shave, so fifty cents a blade say, and only used say an HD 100 times thats another 50 cents, or so per shave,
plus a soap or cream , depending probably anywhere from like 25 cents to 50 cents a shave, and a brush and aftershave, its another 50 cents
its two dollars a shave, and is still cheaper than the cartridges that you feel like you need to use 20 days in a row to make it worth it,

then if you look at it like, buy a hundred blades, for 20 dollars,
if you like the blades, switch them twice a week, thats a year worth or razors give or take, and it costs less than a four pack of the other razor blades,
now the razor itself, if you get a tech starting out and it costs 10 dollars, and you have it for 10 years... so a buck a year... even if you got an hd or a slant or whatever, its around 50 bucks, over ten years , because its a good product, it works out to 5 bucks a year , a tube of proraso , bigelow, nivea, arko, or even a soap like, col conk, or mama bear, has pleanty of shaves in it, and at under ten bucks, if you get 30 shaves from one its 30 cents for the month,

now i dont know exact pricing for any new razors, as i havent bought anything other than an old atra and blades, but i know theyre not cheap, and the goo isnt cheap either, and people hate shaving with them,

and with a brush like a tweezerman being 10 bucks... you dont NEED a 200 dollar silvertip. just like, you dont need Penhaligons soap... its just , some people like it :)

the problem is , your grandfather probably didnt have one of each vintage gillette, and 20 of every kind of blade, and a hundred of their favorites,
and 30 soaps, and 30 creams, and 10 silvertips,

he had a Slim adjustable, or fatboy or tech, and a puck of williams, some old spice aftershave, and wilkinson sword blades, and he was happy, at like a 5 cents a shave,

its the collecting that gets expensive, and the i want one of those factor,
i started with a slim adjustable and now have 20 de's and somehhow like 5 brushes... and a cabinet full or soaps. i probably have a couple years worth of shaving stuff, and im veryhappy :blushing:

Honestly, I love blowing money stupid **** to begin with (not implying DE shaving is stupid - but you get my point). Buying/having more creams, soaps, aftershaves and razors than I actually need is part of the fun.

Just stay in a few extra nights a month and put those unspent bar tabs towards new stuff.

Nobody should get into DE/wet shaving because it's cheaper... but for only the simple fact that its better.

I've spent a lot more on shaving gear since when shaving than I have in a long time. Of course, now I am actually shaving, enjoy shaving and enjoy looking clean cut. Before I habitually had stubble and got tired of looking like a slob.

Adding up the cost of all the razors, blades, soap, creams, balms & even two new mirrors, I'm running at about £7 a shave at the moment:001_huh: I'm not in the least bothered though. Shaving is now a pleasure as apposed to a chore. No more irritation, loads of nice shiney toys and sweet smelling gear.

i've always had a cologne arsenal, but now aftershaves:tongue_sm

edit:attempting to be very careful, hate buying stuff i won't ever use again

I'm one of "those guys" - one HD for daily use, an undated tech for travel (or if I've chewed my face up and need to take it easy), proraso cream and bic blades. It works well, and every time I try to switch things up I end up regretting it. Right now, I have some nasty bumps and redness from messing around with a C&E cream sample and I'm wishing I had just stuck with the Proraso. :(
