DE Open comb user? Come on in...

On another thread I was recommended that by me only shaving once a week I should look into getting an open comb razor.

This is where you lot come in!

Not completely sure if I should get one or not, but I just wanted some opinions from the right people.

Am especially curious if you too are a shaver who only shaves once a week.

From what I understand they are supposed to be better at dealing with longer growths? Am I right?

Any advice/links to what you use etc. is appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

Yes! step right up! I have tried just about every razor and blade I can get my hot little hands on and I gotta say my favorite is the Gillette "NEW" Long Comb. Seems to shave great with anything I care to load it up with and I no longer get ingrown hairs on my neck which is a REAL plus. I am going to try out a Merkur open comb soon... Take the plunge!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:w00t:

I shave daily because I love to shave and because I don't care for the "between shaves look", so no experience with long growth. I love open combs but don't think they are "magical" in any way. if you want to try one, the Merkur 1904 is not expensive, easily found and combined with Personna Red's or Feather's should handle your beard. A Gillette Old Type is (in my experience) a little more aggressive. I think so, anyway! Good luck!!

Well - I use three different OC DE's; a Merkur HD, a Merkur 1904, and a customized Gillette New long comb. One thing nice about an OC is that is does not get clogged even if you have a lot of beard. Most of the OC's are more aggressive than their non-OC counter parts (Merkur for example). I prefer OC to a straight bar.

Even better - try a slant. Shaves with a slicing motion and is smoother (IMHO) but can also cause skin burn if you are not an experienced DE shaver.

Out of all my razors I get the best shave from my ball end long comb NEW.

I love that razor.

I recently acquired a Gillette 1920 open comb. I have been shaving with for the past three shaves. I really enjoy how it shaves, I have been using a Super Max blade.

Previously I used a red tip and aristocrat jr for my shaving needs. Acquired an aristocrat #15 and now on my third time using it I dont think the closed combs in my collection will be getting much love now.

Just curious as to how it is customized?

A board member named CoonCatBob of Bobs Razor Works makes custom razor handles and sells them with replated Gillette New heads. I have a couple of his razors and they are out of this world.

Even if you dont get one of Bobs customs the Gillette New is still a great razor.

Another vote for the long-comb NEW, if you must use a DE. Of those, the British NEW is my favorite. Since you are in the U.K. you should obviously find it much easier to locate than I did.

Would also recommend an ABC Empire, but good luck finding one of those.

I wanna be sedated!
I also shave every day. But I love the Gillette New open comb. I like the feel of the comb on my face vs the safety bar. I have two models and both are pretty mild shavers.

Good luck

I have been debating about getting either a Merkur 11C, 12C, 15C, or 25C. Just been debating about the handle girth and length. I like longer handles. I think I would like a thicker handle as well. I just don't want to save with a paper weight, lol.

I just recently got a 15c and though it is not the biggest thing in the world , the few times I have used it it has never disapointed . But again the usual ymmv etc etc . For me my favorite de razors so far have been open comb with firstly( is that a word ?, quick call oxford and notify them :001_smile) a NEW long comb , then a copy of a gillette single ring ( radium razor ) followed by the merkur 15c all great shaver and hands down better than any cart out there I have ever tried .

Yes, an open comb works great on longer hair growth. Great as a daily shaver too. I like the thin capped old types. An ABC handle has a little extra heft feel to it too.
And if you want to get a little adventurous, very few can compare to the Merkur Slant (not an open comb) when it comes to knocking down hairs - it mows right through them.

My regular go to razors have been a Pre War Tech and a 40s SS. I just got a Ball End Long Comb New yesterday, wow. That is an aggressive little beast for some one like me with a baby face. I am a daily or so shaver and so far its to much for me. Time will tell.
