What's new

DE guy here. First straight!

I'm not ready to start using a straight yet but picked the blade up with a few DE razors. Wanted to know what it is, also would be a good straight to restore and use for a first straight razor?

Thanks
Rob

I am not sure about the brand but the best I can tell the edge will clean up nice. Looks to be in good condition and should be able to hone nicely.

I dont know much about straights. The scales are broke and need new ones. Should I replace them or send it in to have them replaced and honed. Was looking around and came across whippdog site and thought I might send it to him. If i dont send it in, where can i buy new scales? Also does anyone know how old this might be? The blade says sheffeild on it. Above the Krosskeys Symbol there is the letters J N&S. Its hard to see in the pictures.

Some info on Edgar Allen & Co, Sheffield: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edgar_Allen_and_Company
The only references I find to Edwin R Kent & Co refer to a Chicago firm, in printed material dated 1904 and 1906. I'd say those dates sound about right for how the blade looks

At any rate, looks like it will clean up nicely without much effort. Is it only the bottom end that's broken? Or are there issues up by the hinge end? I've got a couple razors that are broken by the wedge end, but still tight and straight at the hinge, that I've just taped up to make sure I like the blade before putting any money/effort into re-scaling. Might be something to consider if you're just using this to decide if you like it

Looks okay to me. Superglue the scales together while you learn to use it. Restore it later, after you pick up a whipped dog to shave with while this one is out of action.

Thanks for the advise guys, it helped a lot. The scales were cracked in three places, so I am going to need new ones, still thinking about buying a poor mans combo from whippeddog. What other places are good to look at for starting kits. The blade itself cleaned up nice and I might give it a shot at making my own scales. There was some deep rust near the pivot, got most of it off, I don't have any powers tools just sand paper and polish.

I think Obiwan would dispute "We" are the dark side-but my son does prefer Darth Vader, according to him Darth is stronger.
