Darts?

I enjoy the odd game. Where I live in Germany soft tip is quite popular but it's hard to find a real board. A friend of mine who lives in Holland used to play to quite a high standard(a long time ago). Whenever I go to visit him we always play a few games. In Holland they take it very seriously even just the standard bar player I've played against can get 501 in 11 darts on a regular basis. I just stick to playing my friend when I'm there now. At least he gives me a chance.

Do they play with a doubles or a trebles board? trebles I guess with that kind of score

My ex used the term chuck. In the South here people say, chunk. I find both funny.

Steel tip and 501 is a blast. Ever play any Cricket? I suck at them all so it doesn't matter. Our league meets at a German-style pub. Still getting used to the food.

Yes a standard treble board. To be honest I don't think I've ever seen any other type of board in the flesh. Are doubles boards still popular where you live?

Rick- German food done well is delicious. Don't just limit yourself to sausage and schnitzel.

I continue to try the foods. I don't think the place I go for darts provides the best example of German food. Many things are fine to mediocre. Only had a sausage dish once that was bland. Like eating paper. I want to find some better examples and try those.

And yeah, do they make just a doubles board? that'd be neat to see.

Doubles only boards were a big thing oop north until darts on TV became popular and the trebles board took over.

A game of darts, a nice cold lager and a bratwurst in a bun .... nice

I played the game for years and years, and got to a fairly competitive level where I went to The Windy City Open in Chicago, and to the Golden Harvest in Saskatoon. I was pleased with my play at both those, but couldn't take the same game back to regular leagues so I gave up.

That is an awesome game. Like chess, the basic rules are simple but more you learn about it, the harder it is because of strategy.

I have a couple of bristle boards and play steel-tips exclusively. No offense to anyone, but I just don't get soft-tip darts. I've got two sets of hammerheads which I really love. I always seek out an English pub when I travel (one of the few places where you can count on steeltip play) and have a board set up in my man cave.

I generally play 501 or cricket. I'm not great, but I do enjoy it. I once played in a leage and came in first among the worst teams--even got a trophy with the back half of a horse on it!

301 doubles in doubles out

I have a set of Unicorn's and an old old set of Puma darts, haven't played really since I left Fiji oh well.

I just had a quick look on the net to find the real name of what we call Shanghai but can't see it. Basically you have to get 3 of a number to own it and then any more score. Once the other person has 3 that number is eliminated and once all are gone the person with the highest points wins. You use from either 10 or 12 to 20 and also have doubles, triples, bulls and beds (all 3 in a sector in the same turn). There's a lot of strategy involved and is my favourite game.

Killer is great with group of people and even if there are mismatched skill levels it still works well. We've had games with people who can consistently get beds and people who struggle to hit the board both playing at the same time.

I highly recommend getting a board with sunken wire as well. Basically its thin and flush with the bristles, extending to the back of the board rather than sitting on top. We haven't had a bounce out (other than off another dart) since getting it. It also avoids the annoyance of the wire distorting over time and not fitting the colours anymore.

I have a really good board with a octagon shaped back stop around it with foam that this guy who owned a dart store in Brampton Ontario made himself. He is from Scotland and a really awesome guy, must just be mostly for a hobby since I can't imagine that he makes much selling darts in Canada. But it's great to have and the kind of store I always liked to support rather than just going to Dufferin Games or Canadian Tire for stuff.

But I moved a few months ago across the country and haven't really played at all since then. I might like to get back into it at some point, but it's going to be even worse soon when I move into a little 1 bedroom apartment where there is certainly no room for a board.

It can be a ton of fun, nothing is more relaxing and can get you to escape from everything in your day to day life.

I was getting pretty decent when I was playing and practicing everyday, I've had 4 180's altogether and could usually finish a game of 501 in <25 darts, which I think is pretty good for a amateur.

I agree bigtime on getting the new boards, they aren't even really wires, more like thin strips of metal dividing the areas. One time I had a big bounce out and the dart landing point in hard into the carpet like 2 inches from my sock foot, not good!

You can get a good set of tungsten darts for probably 50-60, much better to pay the price then getting crappy brass ones that are so thick you couldn't fit 3 into a treble if you wanted to. But you gotta make sure you can try them out, and that's one of the advantages of a dart store.

Part of it is just adjusting too though, when you're starting out you don't know what a good throw and feel is, that comes with practice and good technique. But I think the basic principle is that it's better to get heavier darts as beginner - something like 24 to 28 grams I think is average. They are more forgiving but as someone gets better they usually want something lighter since it is a finer feel, but then again there are top notch world champion dart players that use heavy 28 gram ones and others who use tiny little 14 grams, so there is no right or wrong it's all personal preference and what you get used to.

Well the guys I knew who introduced me to that kind of game called it Tactics but I think the more common name is Cricket.

We would play with 20 down to 15 and then double, trebles, and bullseye. You had to get 3 of them and then you could start scoring points on it, so if you got a triple 20, you could count it as 3 20's or a triple, and then once you've opened a number and start scoring points on it, the other guy has to get 3 to close it so you can't score any more. Probably the best darts game for the average player, I always found that 501 is just too difficult for the casual player since it just invariably ends up sometimes taking like 40 attempts before someone hits a double.
