D.R. Harris Mahogany or Beech?

See that D.R. Harris offers soaps in either mahogany or beech bowls. See that the mahogany runs slightly higher in price. But other than the aesthitics of the thing, is there any real difference in durability, soap performance or anything else? Probably a dumb question, but had to ask!

just a different bowl. If you aren't wild about the bowl or have a vessel of your own just get the refill and save a few bucks. Mahogany might be a little friendlier by a slim margin to the bathroom area, but not much. same ol' soap in either bowl.

I have the Beech bowl and it is very nice. I am not sure if the other bowl is really Mahogany. Mahogany is a very light colored, pinkish-beige colored wood that will darken a bit with aging. What we mostly associate with Mahogany, this deep reddish color, is mostly from staining the wood this color.

Thank you! That is what I wanted to know! Hadn't thought about the staining aspect, Rudy. Think I have seen raw mahogany once, and don't remember it well. Believe that mahogany was used for ship decking quite a bit, so wondered if that might hold up better to water. Beech I know nothing about.

as far as I know DR Harris markets their mahogany bowls as 'mahogany look'.

I think they may just be the same wood ... one stained slightly darker

I have the beech bowl. It is a nice piece of woodwork but in my view not well suited for the soap. The puck fills the bowl to the rim which makes loading a brush much more of a mess than a deeper mug or bowl.

I would not bother with the bowl again.

I've never had problems loading with the Harris bowl. YMMV, as with everything here.

...and the mahogany bowl is definitely not mahogany. It's mahogany stained.

Im usually a little OCD about these sort of things but I never really checked to see what kind of bowl my DR Harris Almond soap came in until after I received it from Phil at BullGoose.... It turns out it is Beech and it is a handsome tidy looking bowl in my opinion. I think the packaging on a majority of the Harris line is really traditional and top notch.... the bottles, jars, and bowls would grace most any shave den in a very simplified but elegant manner.:thumbup1:
