D.I.Y. Shave Cream

Has anyone ever tried making their own shaving cream? I found a recipe in ReadyMade magazine. It uses Borax and glycerin. I'm not sure if I can reproduce the recipe due to copyright laws. But if anyone is interested I could share it with you all. It could be a good experiment.

I tried this recipe twice and failed.

It is not clear how to measure the different ingredients - by weight, or liquid oz.

The cream was not very usable - and looked nothing like the picture they show of a jar full of butter/whipped cream looking stuff.

Here is my post about it:

Here is someone else's recipe:

Here is Sue from Saint Charles Shave showing how she makes her cream:

I just did a search for "cream" and "recipe" in the Shaving Cream forum.

cool thanks. I'll post the recipe anyway. I'm almost sure that they're fl. oz. since most things in the recipe are liquid. it makes 1 full cup (8 oz.).

1 oz. - apricot kernel oil
1/2 (.5) oz. - solid beeswax
2 oz. - water
1 oz. - liquid castile soap
1 oz. - glycerin
1 tsp - borax
1/3 (.33) tsp - tree oil
20 drops lavender essential oil

Combine first 2 ingredients in double boiler, mix water castile soap, glycerin and borax separately, lower heat on wax when melted, add cool mix to warm one, stir with fork or whisk till frothy, remove from heat and add the rest of the ingredients. Store up to 6 months in airtight container.

I guess it just feels good to know you made it yourself. though it seems would be a diss towards the soapmakers who have had a lot more experience producing shave soaps. I just want to try it cos it seems "old fashioned" to me, like they used to do that bacck in the day. i have no clue tho, i could be totally wrong hehe

Ingredients

* 1 cup heavy cream
* 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
* 1 tablespoon confectioners' sugar

Directions

1. In a large bowl, whip cream until stiff peaks are just about to form. Beat in vanilla and sugar until peaks form. Make sure not to over-beat, cream will then become lumpy and butter-like.
