Czech and Speake #88 Shaving Soap Scent ...

I was in Cambridge Chemists yesterday and popped off the cap to the Czech and Speake #88 cologne. It was incredible. And it got my wife's unqualified and enthusiastic approval. I left with just a sample of it because I wanted to see how it wears on my skin before getting a bottle. But by the time I went to smell the shaving soap, my sniffer was pretty done from the wonderful scents in the shop. I tried to do a bit of reading on the shaving soap and it seems like there were some mixed reviews about the performance, but most reviews were quite positive. I'm mostly curious about the scent. At the shop, I didn't get much rose, which is what seemed dominant in the cologne, but my sniffer was in sensory overload by that point. In the few reviews I found, it seemed like people were still picking up a rose note, but that it was definitely much less subdued than the cologne. For those that have used both the cologne and the shaving soap, how close is the shaving soap to the cologne?

I have both, and I honestly wouldn't think they were supposed to be the same scent if they didn't come in the same type of box. If I take a sniff of the soap knowing it's sold as being the same as the cologne I can make a loose connection, but that's it for me. I've seen others post that they are dead ringers for each other, so maybe I got an old puck or something. At any rate, or scent, I love the performance of mine. Well worth every penny

I do get the scent from the soap, but it's quite subdued in comparison to the cologne.

It's a good soap, but it is not in the top 5 of my rotation (and not even in the top 10 - I'm such a soap sl*t).

I love the cologne, however.

The soap smells (and works) great, but to echo the others it's definitely a much more muted version of the cologne.

By the way, I was one of the people who initially gave the soap a mixed review. I'm happy to say that I've since found out that I had an off puck. The puck I currently own works beautifully. But like Jon, I too am a soap sl*t. So it probably doesn't get as much use as it should. :blushing:

I feel the soap echos the cologne but there are some differences. Definitely more muted. Rose is much less dominant. The soap has what I would describe as a mouldy or wet cardboard kind of smell. That is the best way I can describe the smell but it doesn't smell bad (if that makes any sense). It actually smells quite good for a shaving soap.

I thought the performance was good but not worth the price. I would rather purchase Penhaligons, Trumper or Harris. If you like rose and like to pair soaps with colognes for the overall scenterrific experience buying the soap is worth a shot.

Thanks for the input! Perhaps my nose wasn't as shot as I thought. I currently have Trumper's newer formulation (i.e. no tallow) Rose scented shaving soap. I really like the scent and think it would probably work quite well with C&S #88, but I wondered if the C&S soap might perform better than the Trumper's shaving soap. I like Trumper's shaving soap, but the lather isn't as dense as some others (AOS, Pen's older formulation, Tabac). Thus, I've wondered about picking up the C&S shaving soap to go with the cologne, assuming I decide to try acquiring some.
