Cyril Slater blade for honing practice

Good morning Gentlemen,

Just another quick one.

I got a Cyril Salter blade to practice honing on. Does anyone have any experience of these blades?

Do they hone up?

I've since seen that they are one of the NOT recommended blades on SRP. Is this because they don't hone up well?

If they don't hone up well, would I be wasting time practising on it?

Thanks again.

The blades listed on the SRP do not buy list made it there because of issues that were experienced by different members. They most likely are there because of the fact that honing them is either quite difficult or no possible.
I would look for another cheap razor. You can get some nice practice razors on ebay for under $25 that will give you all the practice you need and still be useable when you are finished. The other option is to go to SRP or this classified section and buy a cheap razor for just the purpose of learning. JMHO

Enjoy!

I got one for my first straight razor and they are crap! i sent mine to a honmeister he sent it back and said the edge just kept crumbling and was un honeable.

Good to know, I was tempted to get one for the exact same purpose. I will get a $0.99 razor of the bay then

I once honed one for a member: it never took an edge. he took it back to the vendor and got his money back. At the time we both were unaware this was a blacklisted razor.

It wasn't, iirc I blacklisted it as a result of that thread - there should be a link to it :)

I complained to the vendor but she said because i'd used it there was nothing she could do for me and they never had any complaints before yeh right O. I actualy brought it from cyril r salters they must just get there name printed on the scales god no's who actualy makes them

I can hone it

In fact I have honed about 6 of them...

There are many razors on that list that can be honed, the problem with many of them is that at the price point they are being sold at, it makes NO sense to try...

I would never recommend that or a Venus, or even a DA, or GD, heck I don't recommend Wapis either, but they can be honed, and they can be shaved... How long they last I don't know, but they can be honed...

So yes if you already have one give it a try, but I would not go buy one...

I had one and Kees volunteered to hone it. We both struggled beyond belief and couldnt get it shave ready. I have since bought half a dozen razors, all shave perfectly and can easily be honed...the the salter razor is made of very suspicious steel......demand your money back.

Good luck

I've also heard they're pretty bad at holding an edge. IMO, I say you should just go for it on a good razor. There's only so much damage you can do to a razor on a hone, unless you do something really stupid like dropping it, edge first into the stone. If you follow the guides in the wiki section on SRP and use a light touch, you'll probably surprise yourself and end up with a decent result. If not, you can send it off to a pro, probably for less than the price of a cheap razor.
