Cyril R. Salter Shaving Cream [Wild Rose]

Just had my first shave with Cyril R. Salter wild rose shaving cream.

On the label, it's noted as a luxury shaving cream...and I can see why. I face lathered with my Semogue 803 and it produced the thickest, most cushioning lather of any shaving cream I have tried (TOBS Lavender, TOBS Sandalwood, and Proraso). The scent is pleasant enough and smells like delicate tea roses. I got a really close shave with this cream and my face felt moisturized, cool, and refreshed after the shave. It had a great balance of cushioning and slickness that impressed me. At $15.00 for 200 ml/165 g/5.8 oz, this is an affordable luxury. I will try more shaving creams from Cyril R. Salter!

The Vetiver one is a love it or hate it proposition. I personally LOVE the stuff. Some people don't seem to like the earthy scent AT ALL. I did a poll a few months ago to try to see if the folks who like single malts like this and the non scotch drinkers were the haters, but it was inconclusive.

It surprises me that they don't get mentioned more often here. They perform as well as some highly praised creams.

I've had 4 tubs (Rose, Mint, Citrus, Sandalwood) and I don't think there's a better performing cream out there, even at twice the price. I don't particularly like the spicy sandalwood scent, but the shaves have been consistent no matter what the scent. I gave my Rose to a brother-in-law (that I like) but plan on replacing it. The sandalwood I may have to sell off.

I don't generally love rose scents but I've got the Salter vetiver and sandalwood on my radar. Thanks for your assessment, I'm guessing that all of the creams have similarly positive shave properties.

They are all the same cream base, and yes you get a good lather. The pots are quite full but you do tend to use a little more than Trumpers for example due to the slight mousse consistency.

The vetiver is a bit like Lapsang Souchong tea smell with a twist of candied peel in it. I really like it (that's what I used this morning) but its a case of YMMV.

Sandalwood is quite spicy and got more of a bite to it than the usual milder sandalwoods

Almond is a very mild and neutral almond scent.

Rose is quite delicate.

Someone else on here tried the mint and said it's like mint ice cream in scent and colour and they have to resist the urge to eat some!

Fresh Mint does smell like mint chocolate chip ice cream, although one of my daughters says it reminds her of a York Peppermint Pattie candy bar. Sublime Citrus is sort of a grapefruit/citrus smell.

Because of Brian I have bought both the Fresh Mint and the Lime. I had not used them for a while, but recently used it again and had forgotton how good they are! It's some of the best cream I have tried.

I spent a week with the wild rose and absolutely love it. Very luxurious and soft and cushiony. I've tried several rose creams and this scent is my favorite. My wife also loves it.

I am very fond of rose scented soaps and creams but have not tried any of the Salter line. That may change soon. The Vetiver is another one that piques my interest.

Phew, cyril vetiver is definitely a must-smell-it-to-believe-it type of thing!
It's far from the "musgo real" type vetiver scent, and far closer to the "oops, I dropped my hotdog in the campfire ashes and took a bite of it anyway" type.

I was recently very fortunate to have been PIFed a sample of the Salter Vetiver... I won't be using it myself, so I'd be happy to send it your way Doug. If interested, please just shoot me a PM.

So the rose is understated? I don't think I could just buy that blind - whereas the vetiver I'm willing to take the plunge. I'm not too big on florals, in general.

Sorry to sidetrack the thread again, but is the vetiver recognizable as such in the grassy/earthy sort of way or is it just one-dimensionally smoky?

I enjoy lapsang souchong and Lagavulin (I've heard other people mention that) but I guess I'd prefer it if it had a little green character for balance.

What's the longevity like on the vetiver, by the way?

The Vetiver has a twist of candied peel and grapefruit in it to give a bit of sweetness IMO.

I feel Salter performs better than the more expensive creams.

Hard to beat Salters for quality and value, especially when you consider the size if the containers.
