Is there any way to get some custom etching done on a blade? or is this something that's only done during the original manufacturing process?

Sorry mate, I can't help. BUT I do like your idea. Not so much for a blade, but on a razor head would be awesome.
Custom etching can be done after the manufacturing process.
Doing the etch is actually quite simple - but what is more difficult, is getting the etch made.

Here is a link to make your own electro etcher, it is very inexpensive and easy to do.

You could leave out the AC leg and just etch it in with DC, AC is what darkens the etching.

Jan @ Tus Technologies can make your stencil happen. I personally use a Personalizer Plus, but not sure how much $$ you are wanting to spend, or if its a one off....

thanks for the links but I'm really not looking to get into etching my stuff with my own set up. just thought I could send a razor or two out and pay a few bucks to have someone do it for me. something like this http://www.tustech.com/admin/eccm
