Curious about "New DE Heads" on Bob's handles

I just ordered a Bull Mastiff from Bob's Razor Works. It will come with a "Goodwill New" head done by Bob which was all he had in stock. I am aware that Bob's handle will take other heads and may be interested in pursuing that avenue at some point.

I like the idea of the open comb razors as I have very thick hair that is hard to shave close. I believe an open comb will help get closer to the skin and help with longer hair, good because I do not get to shave every day.

I am hoping to get an education on the new heads here. I think the one I am starting with is a "long tooth". I understand there are short tooth models, a "New Improved"..... I have searched and read quite a few posts but I am not finding exactly what I am looking for.

Any information on new heads or any other heads that fit Bob's handles would be appreciated.

I have one of Bob's amboyna burl handles with a replated long-tooth New head, also from Bob. The New is my only open comb razor, and I find it to be more aggressive than my 40s Milord (same as 40s SS) or my Slim set on 4 or 5. I do find it works great with a couple days growth, but I have to go slower and pay more attention to prevent irritation as compared with my other 2 razors. Now, I've only been DE shaving for 5 months, so I'm sure some of that is related to technique.

I think just about any head from any Gillette 3 piece razor will fit Bob's handles, but I could be wrong.

hey..I have been using my gem 1912 n ge stainess steel blades which I just wipe em clean!..I use gillette moisturizing..been 3yrs..never looked much at anything else..I have sensetive n coarse hair/face.
Good Luck!

Thanks for the replies.

I am using a gold Aristocrat (1946-47 I think) at the moment and it does well on my face. I have problems with the area between my throat and neck muscles. I think this area is in a facial valley that is hard to get to from any angle.

I may try using the Aristocrat razor on my face and the New Long Tooth on my neck and when I have not shaved for a couple days. My skin gets a little raw sometimes but I think it mostly has to do with the fact that I make quite a few passes & buff certain areas trying to get that BBS shave. If the new razor reduces the buffing and number of passes it might even prove less irritating.

I was hoping to find out a little about the various types of open comb teeth and which ones are more/less aggressive. I have thought about a slant too. I think most slants would be a notch more aggressive than most open combs although there may be a wide range within each head type.

I've used most of those heads before with Bob's handles.
The handles will fit almost all regular 3-piece DE heads. I say 'almost' just because I haven't tried all the various DE heads. It's possible that there'll be a head somewhere that doesn't fit the handle.

The long-comb New head is nice and aggressive without being unusable. You could use a Tech head if you want the shave to be milder, the short comb New is a little more aggressive than the long-comb, and not nearly as comfortable to use (in my experience). The New Deluxe head works really well with it (if you can find one for a non-spindle razor). The New Improved and Old type heads will also fit on the handle, but they were made for slightly thicker blades and some people don't like them much with modern blades (though others love using them, YMMV).

The Merkur Classic and open comb classic heads will also fit these handles, as well as the one iKon head I tried.

To my mind, the long-comb New head goes best with these handles, so you've got the best of them.

Bear in mind that the handle is heavy enough to make the shave with any of these heads a tad more aggressive than with their original handles.

MajorBurns,

Thanks for that information, maybe the fog is lifting a little on all these "New" razors. Great to know I can use all those razor heads on Bob's handle. Maybe this is why I see razor heads, in pictures of peoples shaving gear, without handles.

Apparently there have been quite a few different New models made over a long time. I searched on "Goodwill New" and kept finding info. on Gillettes issued to American troops in the WW's.

mblakele,

Thanks for that link, I had not found it. Wow the Goodwill is different! I have never seen a SE razor with a blade aligning system through the top of the razor, or remotely like the Goodwill before. It will be interesting to see how well the design serves its purpose.

There are a number of Goodwill heads and they may shave differently from each other.

It seems to me that the Goodwill I have (160?) may be slightly more aggressive than the NEW. My NEW is out being replated, so no direct comparison for now.

I have found the Goodwill to be a fine razor, but you do have to pay attention to blade alignment, as it is possible to be very, very off.

While I have only about eight or ten shaves with it, I like my Goodwill.

I too have a thick beard and the open comb Gillettes do very well with it.
