What's new

Creek ready ... those pesky tiny thing better learn to stop stealing my bait and hook themselves dang it !!!!

I have not gone fishing in many many month, mainly because I have been good at pretending I was too busy doing nothing. Did not renewed my fishing license back in September and just left the tackle box collect dust, managed to hide the fishing rod sometimes during the autumn.

Got the fishing license back a month ago or so and did nothing with it. Finally decided it was time to stop that non sense and get ready.

Opened all the boxes to see what I needed and I am sure like many of you I have enough for a few years execpt maybe those pesky hook and bobber that seems to prefer living in trees rather than in my tackle box ! Go figure.

A box of red worm and I will be ready.

I generally hop around the small creek around here so the old crusty Shakespeare is all I need as well as 2 small tackle boxes in the pocket, one for the soft plastic and one for the worms.

This year I will finally target catfish and I will do some pole fishing ... No more excuse for those either

Went to get the necessary stuff to get ready at the local academy a mile up the road. Before getting into the store I decided to open the car armrest and see what was there. I guess I have been a good little squirel, save for the worms and float , everything else was in there, I must have picked those when they were on sale and just drop them in there for the rainy days ...

I’m anxiously awaiting my annual Father’s Day trip. The past couple years, my preferred Yellowtail have not been targeted by the sport boats given the abundance of Bluefin Tuna in our day range.

This year, they have revisited the islands and have found some luck in locating those Jacks, in the nice 25+ models…

Was in my local Big5 yesterday getting a pack of Senko’s in 297 - teaching my daughter that lures are designed more to catch the fisherman than for the fish…

Tight lines !!

With the amount of rain we got this week all the way until yesterday afternoon, the water was pretty clear

The last one of the day. 1/32 jig head, a piece of worm and that's it, I generally do not catch monster this way but it is more fun to see and feel the line tighten than the bobber sink down.

Well lets face it, an 1" of rain overnight changed the pace of that creek a bit with an extra foot or two of water rushing around. Did spent a bit of time going upstream through brush an crap and found the spill way as I could hear the water. It looks promising if it holds water, I'll come back in a few days and check it out.

I did found the easy way in too, turns out the trail was 50 yard away to where I started making my way to it ... oh well

Decided to spend the afternoon creek wading using the tin box set up. Turns out I forgot to put some bobber in it as well as smaller jig head. Still managed plenty of fish on a simple line and hook set up. Nothing big but plenty enjoyable. Decided to finish the day where I took the picture above the last time. There is fry everywhere, time to break the panfish assassin lure out and get some fun.

Somehow the local lake has smaller beast that the tiny creeks ... Who would bet on that

Their lil cousin spent a bit of time under a bobber, got taken for a ride by a turtle, got used as a practice target by a bass or two but managed to be released alive . Go figure

Finally took the new cheapo kayak out to the local lake. I had to myself and managed a few nice bluegill even though, trying to figure out that kayak was priority number one. Here is a picture of the smallest beast I caught well into the creek when I could get the phone safely out.

Also spent a bit of time cleaning out what I could see. The local catfish fisherman had lost a bit of gear.

Well of the two above one got tackled today ... kind of

got a cane pole, took it to the creek and managed a few fish. Now for the bad, the line that came with it sucked. I managed way more fish stick that I care to admit. and spent 10 minutes fishing 50 untangling. Oh well the learning curve will be steep.

That doesn't look like the cane pole I used when Granddad and I went out to fish the stock ponds If I happened to get hung up in the cattails he'd wade out and get me unhung.

Good times...good memories.

I had a look a like one 40 years ago or so, can't remember if I caught anything or not with it. Back then we fished on the pier more often than not in the port so a cane pole was not the first choice what so ever. My 40 yo spinning rod is still alive and working good so I hear. My nephew spent many a summer 10 y ago fishing with it. The reel did got changed though. As a matter of fact all 3 40 to 50 yo rods, dad's, big bro and mine were still working, my dad's and mine got a new to my nephews reels added to them. They still caught a few Boston mackerel last summer with them as far as I know.

Lets face it as frustrating as it was to deal with the hang up and whats not, still beats seating in the couch to have the feet in a the warm creek waters of central Texas. A new 4lb test line of the proper lenght as been rigged up, tackle is being sorted as I type this and tomorrow will be a repeat of last monday with the cheapo Kayak at the local lake. I'll bring three rods this time (aka all my rods).

Stay cool up north ish

My 12 year old showed some interest in fishing so for his birthday I got him a basspro micro light rod matched it with a carbon light reel. Also put together a tackle pack for drop shot rigs. Need to get him out this Saturday morning.

I like to fish 3/16oz dropshots or Ned Rigs here on a U/L or Light setup. Our water is super clear so we have to be picky about presentation mostly.

The lake I like to fish coincidentally has been known to kick out lunkers like this one (actually larger models):

The one I missed looked just like this one 🤣

Not sure how big it was but that thing snap my line like it was nothing. somewhere in that lake a bass has a 1/32 oz jig head a bobber in tow and a length of 4 lbs mono. I was not going after a bass with that and my 1.5" piece of worm.

I did caught a 1.5 - 2 lbs on the cane pole right at the start of the day and those 2 fishes is all I saw today.

Using an 8lb leader myself, so yeah - I'm a sure break off if a double-digit LMB comes along; but that U/L rod and reel is gonna scream for a bit - LOL

Those Berkley (Gulp) Trout Worms in Bubble Gum have been a winner for my daughter under a bobber

Well there was a few small ones and quite a few nicer ones on the cane pole. I also spent an hour with the ultra light just tossing a free falling piece of worm on a hook, I always enjoy this.

You gotta love sight casting for a bigger fish and have him come up for the bait in a clear creek. Thank you green sunfish
