What's new

Creed

Gents, I was at Neiman Marcus this afternoon looking around with a friend. I was at the Creed counter and got a chance to sample some of their scents. I have owned several of their colognes in the past and always thought they were overrated. I did not have to sample the ones I owned so I tried a few that I had not smelled before.

There were a couple that stood out for me. I liked Aventus. NM is taking pre-orders for the juice since it's not yet available. I also liked Love in Black. Both would be appropriate for evening wear.

Nevertheless, I bought a bottle of Acqua Di Parma Arancia Di Capri. It's a great citrus scent.

If I had to guess (and I have to guess), I'd say Creed is the same as most other perfume houses in that their feminines are significantly more full-bodied and interesting than most (not all) of their masculines.

..

Wow Featherweight, I find the opposite to be true with Creed. BUT, likely because I focus on a lot of the older stuff- Tabarome, Vetiver, Royal English Leather.

Hey, have you ever tried the illegitimate father of Kouros; Orange Spice?

I know, you're a fan of the older Creeds, and I've never tried any of them, so I really can't say for certain based on any personal experience, just going on a hunch. in general I've found that whenever I explore a perfume house's female-marketed scents against the male counterparts, the feminines are bolder and have much more character. But with Creed, as I really haven't delved much into their stuff, I could be totally off base and have it ***-backwards (wouldn't be the first time).

I've read a lot about Orange Spice - well-regarded fragrance on a slew of blogs, and I have seen some comparisons to Kouros as well! Which is great, since I love Kouros. It's interesting, the older masculine and unisex Creeds are written up as being stronger and longer-lasting than their recent releases.

However, when I get into reading about Fleurissimo, Vanisia, etc, they seem to have their stripes in the boldness department. I'm tempted to try Fleurissimo someday because I'm searching for a classic floral for summertime use. but now that you mention it, I'm tempted to try Orange Spice first . . .

If you're a fan of Kouros, you must try Orange Spice just to get the big stupid grin on your face when you first spray it. I haven't really given it a full test wear, but I gather the dry down is quite different, but out of the spritzer it will make you laugh out loud.

Theoretically, Orange Spice was developed in 1951. There are some who think that date is "tinkered" by Creed, and that in reality the same nose who created Orange Spice for them also went on to create Kouros. Other think the creator of Kouros was just riffing off of Orange Spice.

I have a rough idea of your age, and some of the older Creeds may be to formal for you, but as a bit of a 'fume head, you should sample some. I fear many will go the way of Vintage Tabarome soon.

Their new Aventus is a much lighter, cologne style scent, and that may be the direction they're headed.

To your original point, the newer men's Creeds may be less substantial than their womens.

Yeah Pierre Bourdon has been Creed's secret weapon for quite a few years - he is, after all the nose behind Green Irish Tweed. Why they refuse to acknowledge that is beyond me.

After using Original Vetiver, I've got mixed feelings. I'm 28 and trend toward scents that are either from the '70s, '80s, or certain periods of the '90s. Nothing in the last ten years has thrilled me. OV got boatloads of female compliments, but as I'm the wearer, my vote gets final sway! And after a while I was starting to feel that the longevity was a huge issue at $100 + a bottle.

Apparently that's not as much of a problem with stuff like Orange Spice, Royal English Leather, etc. Thanks for the advice, I'll see about finding Orange Spice the next time I'm in the city. Also will try Royal Scottish Lavender, it just sounds too good to be true.

I've never tired Kouros, but I got a sample of Orange Spice last year at some point and thought it was very nice.

I like a lot of the men's/unisex Creeds. They're obviously overpriced, and there are several that just don't do it for me at all, but I think it's a high-quality house with a nice range of scents.

I've only smelled a couple of the women's scents. My wife actually has Fleurissimo, which I quite like and which seems very long-lasting. Another nice one she got a sample of is Jasmin Imperatrice Eugenie.

Can definitely recommend Kouros. It's a classic. There's something amazing to me about the fact that it was created by the same guy who created Cool Water - the two seem light years apart.

Bourdon kind knows what he's doing, eh? I would bet he came up with GIT.

I guess I should give Kouros a try, if for no other reason than to allow me to discuss it here! :biggrin1:

Speaking of Cool Water, I used to wear that a lot in the early to mid 90s, and I got compliments on it. But I really didn't like Green Irish Tweed when I tried it this year, even though CW is supposed to be a knockoff of GIT. I guess my tastes changed over the last 10+ years.

I owned Orange Spice. There are noticable similarities between it and Kouros but they do take different paths later on in their development. It is a very nice scent and one I would consider repurchasing

I would ask that if you do, you procure a sample you can wear around the house for awhile on skin.

My first experience horrified me. Sprayed on card in store for 10 minutes, it can indeed smell horrid. I remain convinced the overwhelming majority of people who loathe and bash Kouros tested it in this same manner. The civet is overwhelming initially and spawns all the "****," "cat ****," and "urinal cakes" commentaries.

It is very unique and it's not for everybody for sure. It walks the line flipping between "dirty" and "clean" better than anything I've run into. I've been surprised at some of the people in my life who like it on me.

It is still a best seller I gather.

Yeah, it definitely sounds like something you don't want to take the "Charles Bronson applying Mandom" approach with right out of the blocks!

Oh, sorry to be hijacking the Creed thread. . .

Congrats, I have it too and it's one of my all time favorite summer scents. It lasts on me several hours which for a citrus scent is quite surprising, especially in the summer.

Other than the three Colonia versions, I haven't tried anything else from AdP. My impression has always been that, what they do, they do very well. As to Creed, I cannot say I have sampled any of their scents that struck me as being terrible....but, for the price, I agree with Austin's impression that they are over-rated. I bought 100ml of GIT in a split deal.....a very likable scent and worth what I paid for it (which was a fraction of list price). Someone managed to purchase a large flacon and split it into portions.

I tried a test spritz of Kouros today. You are absolutely right - the drydown is different, but right out of the gates they are really, really similar, so much so that Kouros definitely evoked the scent memory of the Orange Spice I tried last year.

The drydowns are different, however. Orange Spice is more, well, orangey and spicy. If I had to choose, I'd go with the Orange Spice. Kouros is pleasant enough (certainly not worth of the hyperbolic hatred it stirs up), but ultimately just not my thing, at lease based on one test wear.

When you wear Kouros a lot, you do see that it does at times present it's "dirty" side over the course of wearing it, but I'm among those who think it doesn't deserve all of the hatred many heap on it.

I'll have to get a sample of Orange Spice for a longer wearing.

Nice choice...of the AdP Blu Mediterraneo line, my favorite is Mirto Di Panarea. The Notes include Myrtle, Bergamot, Calabrian Lemon, Sweet Orange, Basil, Jasmine, Rose, Green of Lilac, Sea Accord, Blackcurrant, Lentisc, Juniper, Cedarwood, and Amber.
