What's new

Creed/Penhaligon's/Floris

Have all of these shaving soaps been reformulated into something unusable?

I'm pretty sure the Penhaligon's get low marks now but what about Creed and Floris? Also, are all scents in these lines unusable or just certain ones?

All of them are good soaps, but most would probably argue that they are no longer worth the premium price. Penhaligon's English Fern was maybe worth $35 a puck back when it had tallow as the first ingredient, but the new reformulation is definitely not worth $35 a puck.

I don't know if Creed has been reformulated, but the lanolin-based formula that is currently available is excellent. Whether it is worth the outrageous price is debatable (especially with the lousy wood bowl it comes with and NO refills), but it shaves and smells great.

I use the reformulated Floris JF, I've got no complaints. Not the best, not the worst. I think it's got the best looking bowl of anything I've tried though, if that's important.

Personally, Pen's new formulation soap is ok, certainly not worth the exorbitant price.

I think Pens/Floris creams justify the price, and IMO are much better than their reformulated soaps, which is a shame.

On another note, why these once distinguished companies don't do a deal with McDonalds/Beef distributor to acquire ongoing tallow as a by product from beef patties produced to use in their shaving soaps is beyond me.

The cost cutting thing is a lie. They are trying to be animal friendly :001_rolle

I love that hypocritical care for animals that have already been slaughtered.

Shhh, do not tell anyone :biggrin1:

This has been my argument the entire time. The cows die no matter what, so why not put their remains to good use?

But, enough of this off-topic tallow-loving nonsense

I understand people saying Floris & Penhaligons soaps arent worth the high price tag, "BUT" hypothetically speaking, if money wasnt an issue, (Im presuming youre all discussing the new formulations) are these soaps "GOOD" or not?.

Do they lather well?, and as I say, if money wasnt an issue would you buy them again?.

From what I've read about the Pen's reformation at least...the soap is a sub-par performer compared to its previous versions.

I only had the Pen's Blenheim, Tallow 5th soap and it was awesome. :thumbup1:

And based on what I've read of the newer version, I will not be purchasing it!

Never new of Creed's reformulation. I like the soaps results, it is not an excellent lather forming soap but the lanolin is excellent and has enough protection for a great shave.

Floris' current version is pretty good. Slick and good results but lacks a good lather.

I've only heard the stories of Pen's tallow version.

I would not pay $5 for the current Pen's shaving soap. It is by far and away the worst performing shaving soap I have tried. Still smells really nice, though.

I have the Floris no89 shave soap, which I bought before I discovered the delights of tallow and I must say that it is a very nice soap. I get rich slick lather out of it and it provides nice shaves. Will I buy it again? I am not sure. FWIW, I am fortunate enough to have an old Yardley shave soap which is better than anything else in my rotation. The pre-reformulated Floris was probably somewhat like Yardley and in that case the current formulation is sub-standard.

I have tried the new Pen's BB soap, and it is crap! Even send them an e-mail and asked why they changed away from the tallow goodness - but never got an answer. On the other hand, the new formulation EF is not that bad at all, it is much better than the BB soap. But surely lacks behind the tallow-first version of this soap (glad I got two of them...). The new formulation EF is in my rotation, but I doubt to replace it when it is gone.

We all have our personal favorites, etc., but I was never so disapponted in a Floris product as the Nr. 89 Shaving Soap. It was not reformulated, it was veggie from the start and poorly done. I was very fortunate when the NY store closed. When my faithful salesgal called to inform me of the demise of the company store, I bought every round of Elite and JF I could get. They are in a class of their own. Heavenly is too trite a claim for such excellent soaps. The Floris matching deodorants, shower gels, balms, colognes... To die for!:thumbup1:

Someday when I am dead and gone, if SWMBO doesn't bury all my shaving goodies with me, perhaps these products will be made available to future generations as historical curiosities?:001_rolle

I have the reformulated Floris, never tried the original so I can't comment on that. It's not a bad soap, but it's not spectacular (like tallow Pens, or AOS, or Cella :tongue_sm ) but it gets the job done well, it just takes a little bit more work to get a nice lather.

I saw a thread that indicated that the Floris and Pen soaps are made by the same manufacturer. I have tried both and believe it. The Floris and Pen soaps are similar, with dense foam, but in a very thin layer. Somehow the Pen BB didn't work out right and is the dog of these soaps, with inferior sudsing to the EF. The other Pen and Floris soaps are decent, but not as good as the three T's or Harris.
Creed is the only real superpremium soap, offering a lather somewhat better than the three T's and Harris (but not by that much - not much room for improvement). It is more expensive than the others, but the puck is larger. The boiwl is unfinished, but is easier to grasp when wet and soapy.
Of all of the above, only Creed has made my repeat purchase list (I think it is better than the EF original formulation, too).
