cream users questions

three-tu-tu, three-tu-tu
I'm ready to try the world of soap and have a few questions:

1. Would an old Castle Forbes cream tub work as a holder for the soap puck? If you don't know the tub it's pretty wide - bigger than most cream tubs.

2. After use - to cover or not to cover. I've read some suggestions to cover after an hour or two, but I'm not always home after shaving. I've read never cover and always cover.

3. Rinse the puck before covering? I suspect this would just waste soap, but as long as I'm asking . . .

Thanks,
Keith

Keith, here are my answers to your questions:

1. Yes, Sir. Castle Forbes bowls are large enough to contain most pucks and do make swirling easy and enjoyable.

2. I do cover. Not immediately, but just as soon as the surface of the soap dries out. Generally the time to finish the shave and clean tools is sufficient.

3. While this is not necessary I do rinse because the cake of soap simply looks "cleaner". Not a huge waste of product at all.

I second these answers. Old cream tubs make great soap containers. A piece of painter's tape (or something similar) makes for easy labeling, and can be removed in the future if a new soap finds its way in.

Anything will work as a soap holder. I have some in 1-cup Pyrex bowls, some in empty TOBS cream tubs and some in $1 stoneware bowls I picked up at Walmart. If it doesn't have a lid (like the Walmart bowl) I just put some clingy plastic wrap over the top. And if the soap doesn't have much scent, I leave it uncovered. My Harris Almond has been uncovered for months. I also don't bother rinsing the soap although sometimes I'll hold the bowl upside down under running water to rinse the outside of the bowl if I get sloppy that day. When possible I'll leave it uncovered for 30-60 minutes, but I don't see where that makes any difference.

I smash an ARKO stick into an Old Spice vintage mug and after shaving, I use toilet paper to wipe out remaining foam and then towel off outside of mug. I cover the mug with the small bowl that came with my Van Der Hagen set. Works for me!

2. I don't cover after use. I leave the soap bowl out until I get back in for next day's shave. At that point, if I decide to use a different soap, I cover the previous one and put it away, then open up the next one.
3. I usually don't bother rinsing it out, unless there is gunk buildup, or leftover hair, or something.
