I have been interested in an experiment of the much-heralded "Superlather," but have a limited supply of gear. I do have a VDH Shower+Shave bar. For those that haven't seen this, one side is a glycerin soap they say has aloe vera, and avocado and cucumber extracts. It is partnered with the other side, "enriched with shea, mango, and cocoa butters." Aside from that, my current cream is Dettol, fresh scent.
So here's what I did. Sorry, I have no pics, as I didn't know if my insanity would work.
First, the standard brush soak and drops of water on the glycerin side of the VDH soap. Whipped around that side for a bit, got a nice froth going, then flipped it and swirled just a touch on the side with the butters. Added that to a normal snurdle of the Dettol and whipped up my lather.
First pass was great. Nice and creamy, cushiony, and slick. The fresh scent of the Dettol was nice and worked well with the minimal VDH scent, overall very light. As I went on I started realizing it was too dry, as by the third pass I had almost nothing left in my mug and it was too think. So I added a few drops of water for touch-ups and it sprang back to life.
I ended up with a nearly BBS shave, but a little bit of burn that likely came from my own inexperience. My skin doesn't feel dry at all, and a dab of Nivea ASB has quelled the burn nicely. I'm eager to try this out again and see if I can duplicate the end result and make the journey there better. This 2-sided bar seems pretty nifty for the price, though the cream side they advertise as good for after the shave hasn't done it for me the 2 times I've used it. In this superlather, it seems to add some great moisture and body.
