Crazy just how right Gillette got it on the first try (Old Type love thread)

Pulled out my ABC Empire in silver for a shave last night because I felt guilty about such a pretty razor collecting dust on a shelf. I had about 5 days of growth, and this thing mowed it down in the smoothest, most comfortable way imaginable. I mean, I can't say enough about the Old Type head. Something about the angle gives an almost straight-razor-close shave, but it does it in such a smooth, non-aggressive manner.

I had a single small weeper on my neck where I'm constantly hitting a mole despite my best efforts to avoid it, but that was it. I'm at work now and my face still feels as smooth as it did right after the shave last night. Gillette could've just stopped with the Old Type. I'm glad they didn't, of course, but they could have!

I tried an older blade but it was awful, could have been a lot of other factors though.

-100 year old bacteria? No bacteria could live that long outside a host. Try a bit of alcohol or scrubbing bubbles if your worried.

I bought one a few weeks ago, cleaned it, and have been hesitant to use it. Thanks to your post I think I'll give it a try this weekend.

You will love it. Have you been wetshaving long? If you're really new to wetshaving, and new to open comb razors, it might be a little scary at first. I'm telling you though - persevere. The Old Type is a fine tuned instrument that will give you the best shaves you can get from any razor.

Many times I have used the old 3 hole blades, and I have discovered the trick to it is to strop those old blades, even if they are NOS. Using my Old Types or my Single Rings I can get decent shaves out of an old 3 hole, but only if I strop them. I'm fortunate, I have an old Kanners stropping machine.
The Old Type gives a closer shave than the Single Ring in my opinion. Like the OP says, you can't beat them for a close shave.

Aren't the heads the same on those razors?
