Since he's apparently a blade maker, I wonder if this is a common way for people in that trade to advertise their wares.

If that sounds cynical, let me make it very clear that I'm impressed with how well he shaved with that sword. A while ago, I read the Gene Wolfe Book of the New Sun series, where the fictional hero shaves himself with a sword. I thought it was too implausible at the time, but now I've seen it.
