What's new

Crabtree & Evelyn

It seems I'm always among the last to know, so if this has been covered elsewhere, I ask your forgiveness.

C&E is once again stocking the EJ-made brushes. I have not seen any change on their company website, but the local store here has an abundance in the usual grades.

Those among us still seeking the much-lauded $35 Best Badger should probably give their local C&E store a call.

Best wishes!

Excellent news. Unfortunately, the closes C&E store is 120 miles to the north. I hope I'll be able to find one of these guys on their website soon.

Awesome news. There's one not far from me and I've been considering purchasing this brush. If they have it, I think that'll be the last little push I need.

Boo. Went in, pointed to the middle brush in their three-brush display, and said I wanted that one. It cost $35 dollars. Bought it; walked back to car; realized I had just spent $35 on a "pure badger" brush. Checked the receipt and then grudgingly traded it in for store credit and which then went towards the $65 "best badger" brush they had.

So not only did I waste my time but I spent way more than I would have if I had ordered it on the internet. Not to mention the money I spent on gas getting to the only Crabtree and Evelyn anywhere near me.

At least I got the damn thing.

Sorry, Maximus...I simply saw all those brushes on display and noticed the variety of grades. As I was not "in the market" I didn't check the prices.

A $30 jump in price for a BB is insanity! Maybe someone at C&E has been reading the B&B forum & thought a nearly 100% increase was justified.

To those who are still contemplating a trip to their local C&E..caveat, and call first!

Not too long ago $35 would get you either the Pure OR the best badger. I picked up a best, and it is an integral part of my rotation. There were larger brushers there, to be sure, and they were more expensive.

The $35 versions are on the smaller side, but very nice (to me).

Don't sneeze at the C&E Pure, it's a fantastic all-around brush. Mine is a shedder, but it took me through my first year of wetshaving very well, and it's now my go-to for travel brushes or when I want a little more scrubbing action. It's not quite the value of the old 35 buck Best Badger, but it's still a great brush.

I don't think anybody thought it was a bum brush, just that it sucks to pay what you used to pay for the Best and only come away with a Pure.

Particularly when you actually thought you bought the Best. That one's on me, of course.

KnoxPhil: Don't feel bad, it's not your fault I didn't do my due diligence and C&E decided to jack up their pricing. The important thing (for me) is that I now have my first good quality brush, have been letting it sit in a Proraso lather overnight to make it smell nice, and am looking forward to using it for the first time in a little bit.

Oh, I totally understand. Actually when I first got mine I also mistakenly thought it was the Best. Just wanted to plug the other one a bit, since it's done so well for me.

Out of curiosity, does the "new" C&EBBB have the same handle design as the older one? I have a C&EBBB that I bought just before C&E "went under", and have noticed that, from photos, it is not exactly like the EJ Medium. The C&E has a ring at the top of the handle that the EJ does not.

I have a C & E brush never used and still in the box that says "made in Germany" and Best Badger-Hand Made In England on the ivory hancle.. The rest of the box is in German and French; it had a sticker with it that indicated $68 was the store price. It is a beautiful brush and maybe it is a different box? I used the C & E travel brush in the travel tube for several years and it is outstanding; currently I'm using the AOS travel silvertip.

Mystery solved...I had never taken the brush out of the box and just looked on the bottom where it says Exclusive design by: Edwin Jagger; Sheffield England. The bottom Picture shows the C & E travel brush and tube with the Best Badger for shape of handle and comparison.

Most interesting, Dougr! My C&E BBB looks just like your EXCEPT the side decals on mine oriented such that they are up when the brush sits on its base. Didn't know they did them both ways.

Mine has the same decal setup as yours, John, though it's in ebony.

I can't get over how nice this brush is. Feels great on my face, looks beautiful... the hairs clump together like the brushes people use in all the pictures they post on here. I didn't get quite the quality of lather I was used to this morning, but I think I need a few latherings to get used to how the new brush works. All in all a huge step up from my $8 Shea Moisture brush.

By the way, how much did the Silvertip brush used to sell for? They were selling it for $95 where I went, which seemed a little steep, since I believe that's about as much as top-of-the-line silvertips from Rooney and Simpson run.

If anyone lives in NJ here, the Crabtree & Evelyn at Short Hills Mall has a few brushes with stands and the one at the Woodbridge Mall will order anything you want. The owner is a fellow wet shaver and is usually there. He will order anything for you.. well, almost anything.:thumbup1:

I guess John it was made with the logo oriented so that when it was in the stand where it is supposed to be the logo would be oriented the correct way?

Yep... neat marketing, eh? It's like selling those knife sets with a few extra slots - you just have to buy more knives to fill them up!
