Counting shaves per blades

I’ve been maintaining an Excel file for a while now where I record everything(razor, blade, soap, Aftershave, etc.)

for the last few years I’ve been using a product (soap) until it’s done. I’ve used my spreadsheet to keep track of my blades (razor vs blade, how many shaves, average, etc)

I will be honest, I don’t want to fill the spreadsheet anymore.

i know that some use an app here to keep track of how many shaves they had with a blade. I was thinking that I should go old school. Some use a dice. Then, depending on the razor/blade, I get between 8-15 shaves. Right now, I get 12-15 shaves from a feather in a Merkur 38c.

the dice could work if I had 3 and rotate them as I use them. Then comes the : did I rotate the dice? So I thought I could use what I have instead (I’m overthinking this).

the solution that I came up with is to line up 15 soaps or so. I use a different one everyday and rotate them. If my blade starts pulling half way, I change the blade.

I probably should post my data one day.

I’ve also toyed with the idea of going through the , “What blade did you toss today? Making a spreadsheet to compile the data. But as a procrastinator and OCD perfectionist, I can’t quite get there.

I keep a small paper journal and use casino dices as I seldom go over 6 shaves per blade.

That being said, you can get dices for table top games with 20 sides like the one in the Yaqi Lucky Dice brush. Here you can see both.

I live in Asia, and there is a traditional tool "abacus" that is very suitable for counting the number of blades; and because of its large number of digits, it can be used to track several blades at the same time.

The “abacus“ is available in various sizes and digits, pocket versions, and even colorful ones.

But since I only use one blade at a time, I just use dice.

This is ingenious!

This is ingenious!

The bottom four beads represent 1, and the top one represents 5, so each column can be calculated 9 times; the two columns can be combined to calculate 99 times, and the three columns can be calculated 999 times in total.

Very simple and useful tool.
In the East, it symbolizes wealth and is believed to bring good luck.

I use some dice that were intended for gaming. I believe that they are ten sided. this way I can use a six sided dice to represent the tens place and the ten sided dice to represent the ones place as I'm generally getting twenty some shaves from a blade before I bin it. Not trying to stretch every shave from a blade but I don't see a decrease in blade quality with high twenty some shaves on the blade. I'm binning them around that mark even though I could likely get several more shaves from them.

My Nacet came with a wax paper envelope with no printing. So by doing Sharpie dots in groups of 10, I got 300 dots on there easily.

the tip about knowing whether or not you have incremented yet can be solved with a couple of practical ideas. for instance, you could always get the pen out before the shave that you might use to write on an envelope or note card, and then when you are done making your tick mark then you always put the pen away. that way you know that if the pin is out, then you have not yet ticked off for the shave.

Dice could be the same way. At the beginning of the shave, put your dice away, if you keep it out. Being careful of course to keep it oriented properly. And then when you want to increment you take the dice out and put it on your rack, or wherever you keep it, and increment it at that time and so you always know if the dice is out then it has already been incremented for that shave.

I have a six tube test tube rack where I keep my most frequently used razors. When I finish the shave, I place the blade under the corresponding razor to keep count how many times Ive used it. Works for multiple blades. Since I rarely go past six shaves, works well for me ...

To expand or post a picture of what I’m doing. I have 10 soaps.

where the yellow line is is my “control” soap. Anything to the left was used once. Anything above the control soap and right will be used.

When I reach 10 ( used all soaps), I restart with my control soap and stack them on the left again. When my control soap is done, I will pick a new one. Some of those soaps were not used since 2012...

Normally I should be able to do 1 full cycle (10 soaps) with a few extra.

With blades I start using a new one on a Monday and usually toss it on the Sunday. Most blades I just aim for 7 shaves and start a new week with a new blade. I don’t use a blade for a shave and put it away for another day. I just use one until I am done with it.

Your aluminum container looks really cool. It looks like a butter dish from the Bundeswehr. (with a plastic layer in the inside as well as gasket in the lid)
Does it serve its purpose as soap container well?

Yes, it’s originally a butter container (or dish) with a German stamp on it.

it works well but it’s not the tightest lid. For what I use it for, it works. It may be a bit bulky also...
