What's new

could someone teach me some history?

I have some pics of my grandfathers straight razor and was wondering if someone could shed some light on it's history if there is any. The part between the blade and the thumb rest read "56 Fredrich Ern"
TEVA (I think, cant really make it out with the oxidation/rust that needs removing) and Solingen Wald. Don't really care how much it's worth or anything like that, just wondering if it was something he got here or maybe in Germany when he was there during the 'ol WWII, and if there is any history behind the particular model or anything of that nature. I'd ask him, but as with so many things, he's made the move to the place of the perma-perfect shave (and halos and wings) hahaha.

thanks,

Ross

I read this to date it 1922 but I really don't know.

No expert here but with no country of origin stamp it could be Pre -1894 approx. Someone will be able to identify it correctly.

I believe this means they started manufacturing in Wald in 1922 and then moved to Kanalstrasse in 1939 which means the razor would date between 1922 to 1938.

I am still looking but I don't think Europe required the country of origin stamped on the blade like the US did so my guess was he purchased it in Germany.

Wouldn't that statement make the blade date after 1939?

awesome, thanks for the info guys. where do you go about finding the info on this type of thing?

Nope, it's stamped Wald, which puts it between 1922-1939.

That is the way I read it too

Enjoy your grandfather's razor. It is a connection between you two and will give you an occasion to think of him and the good times you spent together everytime you use it.
