Coticule - try a little shave soap/cream

Was doing a little touch up hoing last night - La Grise coticule with water only, and then I remember a few of you mentioning adding a touch of soap in those final finishing passes. I did 20-30 X's on water, and then 20-30 X's on water + a touch of shave soap.

I think this is my best edge yet.

I'll try anything in pursuit of a great shave - even if that means O-I-L.
( you guys already got me to try lapping film )

Oil

There, I said it....

Blasphemer!

Actually, I do use a touch of honing oil during my final polish. Not sure if it helps much, it's difficult to say with my less than masterful skill at straight shaving and honing, but it certainly feels smooth on the face. The largest downside is that the oil does discolor the slate bottom a bit.

Lather makes the stone act finer hence your results, oil will do this even further but is frowned upon by Ardennes Coticule. When I asked them about oil I was told the long term effects is why they do not agree with it despite me telling then I have done it a few times without issue.

Can we see the la grise? That is a pretty vein ...

Disburden - here is my La Grise (I have two vintage combos arriving in the mail today)

A little lather makes any honing surface behave like it was finer. Works great with barber hones. I had a 1k/6k King combo (actually, I still have it!) and I have shaved right off the 6k side, after a couple hundred extremely light laps on lather. It even works on lapping film.
