"Look what I found"
A nice score this weekend. A old, maybe mid 1800’s, 8 x 2 inch Coti followed me home. It was in a wood case, BBW facing up. Didn’t know what I had until I got home and removed it. A big smile appeared on my face. A impressive natural, checked surface with a rounded bottom. There is a interesting hybrid layer lurking under the surface Last pict is as found
Maybe two years ago this guy came up on the auction site. The price was way to good to not give it a home, so I did. This is 6-3/4” x 1-3/4” x .5ish thick. It is without question the best coticule I’ve ever owned and the easiest, most consistent also. It reminds me of a slab of spalted maple burl.

Just scored this Coticule for $6. It is 6”x1-3/4”x 1/2”. It only took 2 minutes on my DMT to get it decked nice and flat. In doing this I noticed this one seems for lack of better description buttery. I have 2 smaller Coti’s they don’t quite feel like this. I will give one of my wedge blades SE type a go on this.

Just scored this Coticule for $6. It is 6”x1-3/4”x 1/2”. It only took 2 minutes on my DMT to get it decked nice and flat. In doing this I noticed this one seems for lack of better description buttery. I have 2 smaller Coti’s they don’t quite feel like this. I will give one of my wedge blades SE type a go on this.

Some time ago I bought a good size vintage coti off eBay, only to find it was terribly dished in the middle, but only on one side. How you manage that I have no idea. And of course the seller only photographed it from the good side.
anyway, it got tossed on the too hard pile until yesterday. The ends were still thick, so rather than grind it all down the drain I cut them off for slurry stones and spent forever lapping the middle section. The yellow side is pretty thin now, but at least it’s flat. And it’s still a usable 143x45mm.

A vintage stone score from the wild. Measures 7 x 1.5 inches with some manganese blooms on the surface. The Coticule layer is worn thin but still has something to give. The BBW side is leaning maroon and slurries burgundy red. One corner was damaged, maybe from being dropped. Stabilized with thin CA glue and cut away what was still crumbling to make usable. A Goldilocks stone, not to fast, not to slow, not to hard, not to soft
I've been researching, and I think this stone might be what was known as La Rose.
Just picked this smal piece of awesomeness. Don't normally go for glued stones, but pickings have been pretty slim lately, and who could resist those pink lines...

Sharpened a Bengal blade I use to test new stones: light slurry, progressive dilution, water only finish. Twice to be sure to erase any existing finish. Honing was easy, enjoyable, and fast.
This morning shave was wonderful. Plenty sharp enougth, and easy on the skin. Not the crazy sharp filas I normally use, but I could happily shave with this for the rest of my life.
Sobering how a small (16x4cm) humble coticule can hold his own face to a full shelve of prime hones...

Good thing DO come in small packages. This pink 10x5cm is been in my top three for some years. Under running water, put a fab edge on steel. My other Cotis get gealous

Is curious how we never see those formats back in France. They tend to be long and narrow, where you get those great wider faces that help with straight edges.
At the same time most traditional french razors have smiles, so at least initially it made sense...

My new LPB. Beautiful smooth stone. Excited to get her to use.
Stone was a gamble, one of those show the thick yellow side and put a low bin. Sure enough the other side was thin and dished. A lot of very careful stop and go lapping later. Surface is interesting. Blushed, some quartz, some manganese, and ring effect against raking light almost like a tree. Feels slightly light for a 5x2.5
Hey guys, it’s been a while. I found this in a local shop while looking for Arkansas stones. Haven’t really done much honing of razors in a while, mostly just knives. Its a nice little natural combo and measures 4x2. Got me wondering if this could be a Deep Rock brand. The slurry stone is one I had forever and know it a Laveinette.
